What got you started into watching fansubs?
« on: November 16, 2006, 05:47:38 am »
Hi guys,

Many of us might have started watching anime because of fansubs while for others, animes date back from long time ago. I just wanted to know how each of us forum members came in acquaintance with fansubs in general.  So tell us your story.  :)

Good question!

So good that i actually don't know the answer.

I know my first experience with anime was probably pokemon on TV or something, but that don't count.
I don't know how, but I found myself in a anime dedicated hub on DC++ three years ago. There I downloaded Tonari no Totoro. And this was my first real anime experience. I wathced it 8 times over the next week and I was completely taken away.

It's funny how I actually can't remember what got me to download this movie... If I find out I'll let you all know  :D

PS: Tsubasa! You just want us to tear our souls open while you just sit there and watch?! Let's hear it!

Well a part of your wish got granted Hostghost, see I am the queen now! :D

Anyways, I started watching fansubs when I wanted to watch Tsubasa Chronicle and that was the only way to watch it. I had a faster internet connection back then, a lot lot lot faster and I decided to watch some other stuff too. Then eventually fansubs became a part of my life and here I am fansubbing myself.  :) Whoever heard of a girl from my part of the world fansubbing? It's insane but as you can see, that's what I got myself into.

Back in the day, back when I was in high school, I met a boy named Jeremy. Jeremy was the person who first introduced me to anime, and was also the only person I knew at the time who had any kind of broadband. Until he burned Ranma for me (back in the days when like 20 episodes could fit on one cd cuz the quality was that terrible ^^;; ) I had no idea that one could get anime in any form but that offered on Cartoon Network. Sad, isn't it?

The first time I realized that "normal people" could be fansubbers, too, and that fansubbers weren't some kind of superhuman existence was when I found out that a friend of mine was actually a translator for AOne. Ever since then, and ever since seeing BakaMX's release of Gravitation (which really was an awesome release, btw...first fansub I saw of decent video quality with a really good tl and good tl notes), I'd wanted to be a fansubber. It's kind of funny to think back now, but one of the reasons why I wanted to learn Japanese was so that I could be a translator for a fansubbing group.

And thus begins the story of how Beloculus lost her soul to Live-eviL....

Anyways, hey Bel thanks for replying. I am happy you were able to accomplish your dream. Funny, eh?  :P We are like the only two communicative translators of L-E and pretty much ended the up being translators the opposite way.

eeto...*scratches head*

dont remember O.o i think it was cause i had nothing better to do, and i kept missing episodes on tv. So i'd download the RAWs on the net. But since RAWs are getting harder to obtain, i can only d/l fansubs XD

they are interesting too, the way fansub groups add the karaoke and stuff. wish they could do that on tv. Only show i remember that had that with abit of furigana on top was Bakuten Shoot Beyblade G-Revolution XD

I started watching VHS fansubs when I was around 5-6. My aunt use to go to comic/anime cons and buy them. While digging around for something to watch in her giant box of videos I came across a bunch of tapes with giant robots on the cover. After that my fate was sealed.

Oh, you KNOW I had to post to this one! :D

I have been an anime fan since the late 70s, and I never even knew it! (StarBlazers, Voltron, G-Force - remember those?) Those US distributors did a very good job of hiding the fact that these shows were created in Japan by severely editing them. I came from a crowd that despised anything subtitled.

I didn't learn about fansubs until I wandered into a panel at Dragon-con called YAOI/YURI. The description stated gays/lesbians in anime. There was anime like this??? :o My curousity was peaked and I soaked it in. I left with a list of titles to search for. The only way I knew how to find files on the Internet in those days was WinMX and KaZaA. Subtitles, be damned. I was gonna watch these! :D

The first fansub I ever watched was Baka-MX's GRAVITATION. They were followed by D.N.Angel, Yami no Matsuei and every YAOI title you can name. I've been totally hooked ever since.

Peace!

OMG, wasn't BakaMX's Gravitation wondrous?? Turned me into a total fansub hero-worshipper. When I discovered that I'd encountered some of the staff in the L-E channel, I nearly fell over. I'm afraid I scared poor Teppei once with my obsessive fangirl-ish-ness.

....and yes, "fangirl-ish-ness" is a word. :P

Well.

fresh out of high school here I discovered that there was a large Anime club at the university.

The first thing I ever saw was a sub of Tonari no Totoro.

And I started going every week.

This club had a huge tape library of which you could borrow and copy tapes.

that's what got me into it :P

I just went through a whole bunch of my old CD-Rs with shows I'd downloaded when I first got into anime.  It turns out I also watched BakaMX's Gravitation, as well as their Fruits Basket subs.
At the point when I was watching that stuff though, I really had no idea what a fansub was.  I just knew that if I looked up a title on Kazaa Lite, I could download it. :P  Most of the shows I was downloading at that point turned out to be crappy quality DVD-rips, and I usually only downloaded one or two episodes to decide whether I wanted to buy the DVD.  (I laugh now when I see the file size is 50 MB and the show is an .asf file.)
As hard as I try, I can't really remember when I first really understood fansubbing.  I think it was about 2 years ago, when I somehow found Animesuki.  It might have been when I was in love with Gundam SEED, and SEED Destiny was airing in Japan.

hm, old topic but no matter.  -^_^-
my first experience with fansubs happened, i believe, when i was just getting into manga.  Tokyo Mew Mew was the first manga series i ever really got into (i can't believe i spent money on that when i could've been buying something way cooler, haha) and when they started airing the crappily-dubbed Mew Mew Power (ha) on TV, i think i was inspired to go find the original show on the internet so that i could actually see the same story that i was reading!  anyway, one thing led to another, and i moved from stuff like TMM and Full Moon wo Sagashite (when it was still unlicensed) to older (and better, IMHO) shows like the early Matsumoto stuff (thanks to you wonderful people!)  and Ginga Nagareboshi Gin.  i love fansubs of older, classic shows... sure beats watching dubbed Naruto on CN.  ^_^

I'm a long time Sailor Moon fan, but I didn't really know fansubs existed until spotting Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon on Ebay. I figured out I could download it for free online, which led me to AnimeSuki. This led me to discovering the Sailor Moon musicals, which eventually led me to Live-eviL.

For me it was pretty simple.  In 1991 once you'd watched Bubblegum Crisis, you had watched all of the available commercial releases.  ;D

Okay, so that's a slight exaggeration, but it's basically true.  Saw BGC, watched the crappy Arctic Animation (you think speed subbers nowadays are bad?  at least they're fast) nth generation VHS sub of Orange Road, and wanted more.  "More" was at the university anime club, where they showed subtitled stuff as often as they could get it.

Hmm.....about 7 years ago(I think), a friend introduced me to fansubs via bit torrent. At that time I wasn't really into the whole fansub stuff. However, I decided to give it a try, since I love anime. I ended up liking them, regardless of the translation quality(OK, well, maybe sometimes. But I can understand everything being said, so subtitles aren't necessary.), because it was a fast and easy way to get my anime fix, other than buying/renting anime. All this stuff is so nostalgic.....  :D

Well, it all started when I watched Spirited Away on a whim.  That film got me hooked on Hayao Miyazaki first of all.  Then I discovered fansubs/dvd rips and the rest is history.

I do buy a heckuva lot of anime and manga though.  Too much even.  My wallet hates me and my Japanese pop culture obsession ...

I hear you on that. I buy a lot of anime DVDs, so I have to watch out for how much I spend. Trying not to go too crazy when I see really good deals and etc.  :D

I watched Transformers in the 80s and loved it. Used to eat my cereal in front of the TV and watch it, but I wasn't really aware that it was anime.

About 7 years ago, when I got fired from a job and was watching alot of Cowboy Bebop and FLCL on Adult Swim. I started watching it more regularly, but never really got into anime until I moved out of my house and had 3 other roommates.

One of my roomates was really into it and had a few series on DVD, so I checked them out. I eventually started buying my own series and found good deals for DVDs on Rightstuf.com (25 DVDs for $100 deals) and deepdiscount.com. I was content with my DVD releases and didn't look too hard for anything that wasn't released in the US. Then ANN's rating system changed me.....

I was looking at the top rated series by votes and noticed that a few of them, Honey and Clover and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya were listed. I had never heard of these series and headed to a forum to find more info on them behold, I found that these series could be watched online. I searched them out and watched them both on some streaming site, then found out about bittorrents and IRC, and Animesuki, and the rest is history.

Each person had his personal story, that's nice to read all of it :D.

About me ..., I started watching anime on tv years ago ( since i was a kid ), anime/cartoons/different shows, till i started using internet before .. maybe 11 years, i used to download the lowest quality of animes, mostly in rmvb format, and then i knew some sites that upload dual audio animes in good quality, and then redownload what's good and that's it.

My irc exp. started in 2006-2007 at immortal-anime, and then i moved to rizon where i found day by day the groups that sub a lot of my types anime, so that's it.

My first anime was captain tsubasa on tv, but as a fansub .. it's detective conan ofc :D
