What got you started into watching fansubs?

Well, it all started when I watched Spirited Away on a whim.  That film got me hooked on Hayao Miyazaki first of all.  Then I discovered fansubs/dvd rips and the rest is history.

I do buy a heckuva lot of anime and manga though.  Too much even.  My wallet hates me and my Japanese pop culture obsession ...

I hear you on that. I buy a lot of anime DVDs, so I have to watch out for how much I spend. Trying not to go too crazy when I see really good deals and etc.  :D

Oh, absolutely!  I have self-control issues when it comes to sales (curse you TRSI!), but I'm slowly getting better. :)

I watched Transformers in the 80s and loved it. Used to eat my cereal in front of the TV and watch it, but I wasn't really aware that it was anime.

About 7 years ago, when I got fired from a job and was watching alot of Cowboy Bebop and FLCL on Adult Swim. I started watching it more regularly, but never really got into anime until I moved out of my house and had 3 other roommates.

One of my roomates was really into it and had a few series on DVD, so I checked them out. I eventually started buying my own series and found good deals for DVDs on Rightstuf.com (25 DVDs for $100 deals) and deepdiscount.com. I was content with my DVD releases and didn't look too hard for anything that wasn't released in the US. Then ANN's rating system changed me.....

I was looking at the top rated series by votes and noticed that a few of them, Honey and Clover and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya were listed. I had never heard of these series and headed to a forum to find more info on them behold, I found that these series could be watched online. I searched them out and watched them both on some streaming site, then found out about bittorrents and IRC, and Animesuki, and the rest is history.
