Otakon fansubbing/scanlation panel DENIED!
« on: June 27, 2007, 03:21:11 am »
To everyone:

We just received word form Otakon Staff that our request to co-host a panel on fansubbing and manga scanlation has been DENIED! We have been told there is no appropriate space available. We made our request May 1st, which was the first day the site with the registration form was available!

If you want to see this panel, please write to panels@otakon.org and express your desire to see this panel!

Thanks so much!

And yet they allow other crappy panels to go on? "How to draw anime" "How to pick up girls at an anime con" "Eat Paprika, then watch the movie" and so on <_<;;;;
DVD Backlog: Galaxy Angel (all of them), GITS: SAC, Juuni Kokki, Last Exile, Master Keaton, Rurouni Kenshin TV, Saber Marionette J, Saber Marionette J Again, Saber Marionette J to X, Slayers (The), Slayers Next, Slayers Try.

That's strange.  I asked them if they would do a "pig vs. bunny" panel (for those who don't know, Shinsen's Vincent has a bunny "Yuebing") and they said it would be fine as long as I hosted it.  I asked them what if PETA showed up to protest and the response was lit. 'f*** PETA.'  But it's a moot point, I won't go to that con, much less host a panel, I've never gone to any con outside of my own city, so don't expect to see a "pig vs. bunny" panel if you do show up.

Fansubbing, esp. digisubbing, is the black sheep for these things.  Even if there is a demand, they're under pressure from the industry to _not_ have anything like this or promote it in any way.

TAs far as I know, it really is an issue of space and time. As you may be aware, our original panels person had a series of computer issues and real-life complications, and some data was lost in the handoff to Meredith, who has done her level best to deal with the situation as fairly as possible. As Evan Behar, our programming chief, noted, we had to program based on what we knew was in the queue, and then had to rework the schedule again based on stuff that had been lost in the handoff.

The biggest factor that screwed around with the schedule this year was that we weren't able to get the Arena, which meant that Masquerade and Concerts had to be moved the BCC. This meant restructuring the entire bottom floor exhibit space, and that in turn had an impact on other panel space.

But we also have greater industry participation in panels this year, and that too limited the available space. Some of that participation is direct involvement of Japanese source companies such as Bandai and Gonzo, and high-profile guests like Mr Suwa of YTV. The issue of fansubs is a sensitive one for some of them, but honestly that's mostly avoided by being careful about when we schedule certain things. To my knowledge the only thing affected by that was that we pulled the fansub of Romeo x Juliet, because Gonzo's bringing us the first two episodes in an official capacity. I can't say that the situation won't evolve next year, though, because increasingly the companies involved are bringing pressure to bear against scanlations and fansubs - which, at best, exist in a legal grey area, even for the most ethical subbers.

So yeah, I'm afraid you're probably just a victim of an overall bad situation where information didn't transition properly in an emergency handoff. Evan and Meredith have been working *very* hard to arrange things, against an unmovable deadline (schedule must go to printers in time to print 25k+ copies) meant making a lot of decisions based on best available knowledge. There was no deliberate effort to slight anyone or any deliberate political choices in what they came up with.

Oh well... I hope Otakon isn't losing it's "for the fans, by the fans" philosophy. The corporations seem to be taking over. :'( Otakorp can do whatever they want, I guess. The fans are going to wonder what happened.

Man, that panel would've been cool, too. I would definately attend a Live-Evil panel at a con.

I will be at Otakon cosplaying as Tetsuro Hoshino with my friend who will be cosplaying Maetel. Please look for us everyone! :D Here's a link to pictures of our GE999 cosplays: http://images.cosplay.com/gallery.php?cat=51043&member=4809

We're thinking about handing out cards with the Live-Evil website address on them to anyone who asks about our costumes and wants to know more about the oldschool animes! :D Spreading the Harlock/GE999/Yamato/Leijiverse love. If you see us, please feel free to stop and chat :D

Never been to any con or expo but hopefully before I die I get to go...yes definitely on my things to do before I die list
