The only Matsumoto work that I've seen is about 3 Daft Punk music videos and those were stunning (I've been meaning to see the full Interstella 5555 for years now, should buy that some time.)

They are a stand-alone series, although it wouldn't hurt to have seen the first few episodes from the original TV series. Tetsuro is supposed to be 15-17 years old in the films whereas he is around 10 in the TV series. Enjoy!
