That does look oddly familiar...

But I'm pretty sure GE was inspired by the Night on the Galactic Railroad book(s), as this one probably was.

Considering that L.Matsumoto was an avid fan of French cinema and literature, I'd also add the books "Little Prince" and "Maeterlink's Blue Bird". Maeter's design was inspired by the french movie "Marianne of my youth" after all.
