Yayyy ^_^ New episode!!!
It's a huge undertaking and a fairly lengthy series, but I am definitely prepared to wait for it. The quality is worth it. ^.~
I have to say, I'm watching Space Symphony Maetel, and the animation (obviously) is way better (though the CGing is a little over-the-top.. I'm a bigger fan of more 2-d stuff than 3d, and especially the hand-done stuff is nice), but the plot just can't match up with GE999. Several of the episodes of GE999 almost had me in tears.. This series is absolutely beautiful. I guess I'm just a total sucker for the classics.. if only they weren't so obscure/rare. T_T
It's not to say I don't like SSM, but it's more to say that I absolutely am in love with GE999. Episodes 1, 2, the beginning of 3 and 6 had me really close to bursting into tears.
I really just love travel-anime. I wish I knew more anime in this genre.
The plot of episode 3 really reminds me of a Kino no Tabi episode actually.. I think it's episode 6 or 7.. about the majority rule, instead of Anarchy it was more a parable of Democracy-gone-wrong. I heard there are some other similarities too..
I'm curious as to whether the manga + the anime for GE999 are the same. I've been looking at some episode guides, and I can't seem to find any episodes that match up to the manga (I have Volume 4) so far...

Manga that is translated to english as GE999 is actually a sequel to this series. There are 5 volumes and the storyline matches with animated film Ginga tetsudô Three-Nine: Eternal Fantasy. I think it was pretty odd decision to translate the sequel first. Maybe the original would have been of too much work?
I suppose that the original manga - similar to TV-series - has never been translated to english.
It's really shame as this surely is one of the most (if not the most) loved classic manga series in japan. (or so i've heard) I would buy these (TV-series and manga) instantly if available outside japan translated/subbed. Im sure many others would love it too...
Inuki:
Ahh! I can't believe the original manga has never been translated..
While I'm truly grateful that they've translated one of the manga, I find it really depressing that they didn't translate the original...
Are you sure they never translated the original? I thought I saw 1 or 2 of the older ones selling on E-bay, though they might've been smaller chapters from the new volumes that weren't yet separated, or like http://cgi.ebay.com/Galaxy-Express-999-Manga-Vol-15-Leiji-Matsumoto-Anime_W0QQitemZ5980242879QQcategoryZ1345QQssPageNameZWD1VQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem they may be in Japanese still.
And what's http://cgi.ebay.com/Galaxy-Express-999-by-Leiji-Matsumoto_W0QQitemZ4570423511QQcategoryZ378QQssPageNameZWD1VQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem ?? My friend told me it must be a "Special" manga or something. Is it also from the original manga or what?
I wish they'd separate this stuff and stop the confusion by calling the manga + anime "Galaxy Express 999 - 2" vs. the original or "Second Version" or something like that... At least FMP does it.
ladoga:
First link you posted is one of original series. It's only in japanese.
Second i think is of the same series you own (published by VIZ). It's just Vol.1 with alternate cover, maybe different print thats all. I have these from 1-5 which is just the "Eternal Fantasy" story. It happens all after ending of original manga.
Tetsuro has returned to earth after his first journey and at start of Eternal Fantasy things are not going so good there. Tetsuro has been taken as prisoner by earths rulers. When tetsuro is about to be excecuted Maetel comes in GE 999 to rescue him. There this second journey starts. Story is bit movie like...simply hurried too much imo. IIRC in Vol.4 they visit planet Grotesca and this Schubert guy. Much that happens in this volume is not seen in the movie, but i think other volumes are almost identical to movie.
IMO longer series like the original would be much better as it could tell happenings on each visited planet/place (and more of them) in depth like you can see in TV-series.
