New Series: Sailor Stars - REMASTERED!
« on: April 11, 2006, 02:51:29 am »
Well folks... Announcement time.

Sailor Stars is coming! :D

BUT, we have something no one else can touch: MULTICHANNEL AUDIO! That's right. We are remasting the audio from the original soundtrack CDs. Sailor Stars was yet another show with stereo OST masters that got released in mono. Well, we are going to give this series the respect it deserves. Download the opening animation and hear the difference!

The file format will be MP4, containing h.264 video w/ 5.1 AC3 and mono MP3 audio - another first in the world of fansubbing. Go Live-eviL! :o

I can't thank you enough for this. I've just watched the episode and I was blown away by the quality and attention to detail. I was fond of the old VKLL subs, but these new releases really look like they're going to be something special. I'd also like to thank you for the separate avi release: there are some of us who can't get mp4 to work to any satisfactory degree, so I'm glad to see that there are two versions.

Although... if I could put on my fanboy cap for a moment, there's a tiny error I wanted to point out to you. I love that you've translated the voice acting credits, but you've listed the "Mystery Voice" as Nishihara Kumiko, when it was actually Horie Mitsuko. Since Nishihara appears earlier in the credits as Diana, I guess this is most likely a typographical error of some sort.

So, apologies for my lapse into anal retention - I wouldn't want you to think it mars what amounts to a wonderful release. Thanks again, and I'll look forward to subsequent episodes.

File format question
« Reply #3 on: May 03, 2006, 01:46:49 am »
Okay folks...

Here is the question:

What file format would you prefer to have for the h264 version?

Here are the choices:

1) MP4 file with h264 video and bog standard remastered aac audio but not 5.1 (2.0 stereo) - CURRENTLY USED FORMAT

2) MKV file with h264 video (hard subbed) with 5.1 surround ac3 audio

3) AVI file with h264 video with 5.1 surround ac3 audio

All choices include the original mono track as well. The XviD version will continue to be released as is. The next release will be based on the answers we receive here. HE-AAC 5.1 is not being offered as an option because I'd prefer not to compress the audio any more than necessary. The music is very dynamic and AC3 will let it sound it's best. ^_^

Hi, my first post. First I'd like to say you guys rock ;D.  It's good to see a new translation, rather than a rehash of the VKLL ones.  And the remastered audio is awesome, good job and thank you.

I don't mind AVI, but I have grown quite fond of MKV so I'm picking option 2, MKV.

All I have to say is THANK YOU!!  ;D

I was just thinking the other day of pulling out my old Vkill tapes.  Definitely worth the re-watch.

I am glad that this was picked up..  I just hope that nothing happens before you guys finish releasing the series.

You guys so ROCK as someone said before I also enjoy VKLL's copies but I just watched your release and all I could say is wow!  :o  I would like to ask a couple of questions before voting,

1. a, Does anyone view their anime in Winamp here?

1. b, Can you view H264 files in Winamp, if so how?

I goofed and voted for H264 when I thought that was what I was viewing. (GOMEN) I was actually viewing it via avi in Winamp.

 Keep up the fantastic work between this and NANA I think I love you guys!

Preferred means of viewing h264 is using media player classic.

Recommended setup is ffdshow latest build + haali media spliter + media player classic for any and all h264 type files.

It's a rather long and complex explanation about the differences between the 3 different types of h264 files.

MP4 -
It's the most pure format and most standards compliant but can't support AC3 native audio tracks only AAC

MKV -
Yes it supports AC3 but not everyone can get it to work right and dislike it on princple

AVI -
h264 in AVI is a bit of a hack but also takes ac3 tracks.

It's kinda a bit of the devil and deep blue sea situation and fansubbing as a whole hasn't really picked one standard format for the distribution of h264. Theres always the xvid release to fall back on but for those who prefer the better vid quality that h264 offers we're giving people the choice of how they want their poison.

Haali media splitter should handle the MKV container nicely.  MKV is s a great container and I use it when I do any encoding for myself.

Have you thought about looking into the CCCP, it uses the things you mentioned, and it would get everybody on the same page as far as playback is concerned.

What it installs:

Quote from: CCCP faq
* Haali Media Splitter 2006-02-25 (MKV,MP4,OGM,AVI)
          o Required for compliant MKV playback. Attempts to disable other MKV splitters on the system. This filter is also used for MP4 and OGM, as well as AVI. AVI is not used by default in the pack and is not recommended to do so. You will, however, need the OGM and MP4 parts for playing those files, as Windows doesn't understand those formats by itself.
* VSFilter 2.37 (SSA/ASS,SRT,VOBSUB subtitles)
          o Displays subtitles. It will attempt to disable any previous DirectVobSub installations you might have.
* ffdshow 2006-04-30 CCCP build (H.264/AVC,DivX,XviD, various audio formats etc.)
          o Decodes H.264, XviD, DivX, and generic MPEG-4 video. Also used for audio decoding with the following formats turned on by default: AAC, Vorbis, MP3, AC3, DTS, FLAC, TTA. If you would like to turn off ffdshow decoding for a specific video or audio format, read further down for instructions on how to do it properly. Note: this is a stripped-down and well tested ffdshow build. Do NOT assume that you can replace it with any other ffdshow version.
* WMV9VCM
          o Required to play WMV9 content if you don't have Windows Media Player 9 or 10, Windows Media Format SDK, or Microsoft Codec Installation Package for Windows Media Player 7.1 installed - ffdshow can't decode WMV9. If any of those are installed, then WMV9VCM will be ignored during playback (even if it was installed by CCCP) and the WMV9 codecs that come with them will be used instead (which is a good thing).
* Gabest's MPV (MPEG2) Decoder 1.0.0.3
          o Decodes MPEG2 video (the stuff on a DVD). Used instead of ffdshow for a number of reasons.
* Media Player Classic 6.4.9.0
          o Media Player Classic, one of the two recommended players. Choose this one or Zoom Player according to your preference.
* Zoom Player Standard 4.51
          o The other recommended player. Other players are NOT supported; see the Media Players page.
Edit: fixed typo

I actually ended up setting up Zoom Player as someone from Animesuki suggested and now am able to view H264 but I still wish H264 played in Winamp.

I have to vote with my beliefs and love of Winamp, so I may be in the minority
but I vote for #3 AVI

The good news is whatever gets voted on I can still view the episodes. Thanks for the info though I do appreciate it...

I'll abstain from the vote as I favour the XviD version anyway. On the subject of MP4s, though... I've only ever been able to get them to play properly in Zoom Player. I know they can (in principle) be played in MPC as well, but I'm still not keen on any format supported by such a limited number of players.

But yeah, I appreciate you guys making an XviD version for us less well-equipped types. Cheers!

U can just get Kazaa Lite Codec Pack and all codecs are there. I don't think Media Player Classic is a good choice for old systems because it used lotsa sources and has low decoding speed....How about trying mPlayer?
