Japanese speakers please help.
« on: April 28, 2006, 06:22:44 pm »
i barely speak japanese but am an expert compared to anyone else where i work.  I need to call a company in japan later today that could be a possible client and get some information from them.  The plan is to try and get someone on the phone who speaks english.  If this doesn't work I'm not sure what I'm going to do after that but....  How does this sound to those of you who speak japanese.

Below is an anecdote that contains a kernel of truth....

A:So if a person speaks 3 languages, they are trilingual, and if they speak 2 languages, they are bilingual....but what do we call someone who speaks only one language?

B:An American?

A:LOL!!!

Its true; If they know they are dealing with another Country, the Japanese are the last ones to be caught unprepared. Though, you will score points with what ya got there.....

There are way, WAY, WAY more bilinguals in America than Japan. Japan is TERRIBLE at second languages :D

That being said, just try saying...

"Sumimasen, eigo ga shabereru kata irasshaimenka?" in broken Japanese, which they will not understand (they have "gaijin earplugs" and can not understand foreigners). Then they will find someone who speaks terrible English to speak to you...

"whatto izu you wanto?"

Good luck!

It should be 'watashi no nihongo wa anmari yoku arimasen, eigo ga hanaseru hito imasu ka?'....one of the simpler ways to express it
