What got you started into Anime?
« on: May 27, 2006, 10:03:26 pm »
Hello!

I grew up in Latin America, so we get a lot of anime in the free channels (read: not cable) I used to watch Knights of the Zodiacs, Robotech (I don't know the English name), and a whole lot of others.  They all spoke with a Mexican accent (I think most of them go through Mexico for the voiceover, but I could be wrong...)

My family moved to North America and of course those shows were no longer available... Boo-hoo  :'(!  And funsubbing... I didn't even knew it existed until last year! To think that breaking my leg and boredom made me surf more.... Wow! I'm way behind!

Well, I moved to Japan when i was in Grade 2.  Then in Grade 4, we got cable and I came across this channel known as Kids Station..anime channel.  I goto soo hooked into it that before I knew...anime was my life.  Thats how I started learning Japanese.  I came back to BD after Grade 7 semester exams...no anime for 4 years.  Then stupid English dubs on Animax..and sixth months ago, I discovered the fansubbing world!

Well, my first anime would have been Kimba, mixed with some Speed Racer, followed by Voltron, and then the first broadcast of Robotech in '85. After that I was more into comics/manga for a few years, until anime started appearing in Diamond Previews. Diamond required long lead times, so when Right Stuf offered anime by mail order, I bought from them -- and AnimEigo, since they were happy to sell direct in an age when most companies thought their market was retailers. I eventually got a Pentium 1 for use as internet (dial-up) access (which it still does),
and started getting VHS fansubs from various people who were offering them back then. The MPEG 1 Digisubs were too large for the speeds of the day, and the Real digisubs were too poor, so digisubbing didn't really take off until the Divx codec appeared. And then the explosive growth with BT followed a few years later.

My first Anime experience...geez, it was so long ago... ^^; Most of the cartoons I've remembered watching were in the U.S. starting with Robotech, Voltron, Technoman, Speed Racer, Thundercats, etc.

Before my family moved here, the things I mostly remembered were the Famicom (and Disk System), the 3-D goggles, and the revolver guncon. XD

However, I do remember watching Doraemon and a few Miyazaki films, like My Neighbor Totoro.

It must have been in the early to mid 90's, I saw a 'ranma 1/2' comic book published by Viz comics.  It was #3 (1st serie) and I bought it b'cos I thought the cover was cute.  I read the story and it made no sense (since I  had not read #1 and #2) but I still liked the art so I eventually hunted down the rest of it and followed the serie for about a year.  But eventually I grew bored with it, until I saw Matt Thorn's book (another one published by Viz 'four shoujo stories').  Online, which was different back then, mostly mailing lists run by Hitoshi Doi; Matt was one of the experts on Shoujo manga.  Still, on the local scene there wasn't very much I was interested in, there wasn't much to begin with and nearly all of it was all popularized shounen or sometimes porn.  Still, one day Robert DeLoura posted a translation of Hime-chan no Ribon manga to one of the mailing lists I was on (mid 90's).  I got the original manga and read it, I started following Ribon (the magazine that Hime-chan was running in), then a little after that Nakayoshi (which ran things like Sailor Moon), and other similar things.  As for anime, I wasn't that interested, until later when DVDs were beginning to catch on and websites like 'dvdexpress.com' started appearing.  These sites were practically giving away DVDs, many ran free promotionals or deals like 'give us your e-mail address / sign up a friend / get a free DVD'.  With e-mail sites like geocities out there, which offered free e-mail accounts (paid for with advertising) this basically became a limitless supply of free DVDs.  After about a year those sites started to disappear, but by then I was interested enough to keep up with the local scene.  Late 90's I was rather active in a club that made and showed fansubs, then in 2000 I was in an active digisub group (even though I didn't actually do anything), since then I've been really into it.

for me it was the great Miyazaki's Kaze no Tani no Naushika or Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind and Tonari no Totoro.

Just out of curiousity, are you beginning to learn some tools of the trade now or are you still just "supervising" them?

I don't mean this group, the very first digisub group I was technically 'in' and by that I only mean that I was a member of the private channel.  One day the 'riskey and safety' incedent happened, and that combined with other things made me leave the channel.  They wanted nothing to do with shoujo, so it was pointless for me, other than that seeing a first digisub group from the inside made me aware of the conflict between groups of the time (the 'dirty war') and the problems with how a group was run (a top-down leadership style where the leader made all decisions for the group).  The 'riskey and safety' incedent was where a member had subbed and wanted to release an episode of a shoujo show by that name but the group leadership refused and the release was delayed indefinately and hence only ever avaliable to a selected few online.  A while later it was released by a VHS sub group 'Sachi's Distribution' and a few years later it was licensed in the US.

I had always liked comics and cartoons, prefering the European stories in Heavy Metal as opposed to the produce of Marvel and DC.  I was at universtity at the time (well Wolverhampton Polytechnic as it was) when a friend got hold of me and told me of this Japanese cartoon that was like a movie and on a theatrical release in Europe.  We had a state of the art arts cinema (Wolves Poly not me and my friend) which I was a regular at (also liking contientnal and art house cinema).  I saw the anime and fell for the genre.

The title of this new release ..... Akira  (I know this now ages me  ::) )

Is interesting you mentioning an interest in the visual arts, specially cinema.  I've always been drawn to anything visual, but my real conversion to anime (like in I squandered everything I made in DVD's and the like!) was definitely by watching  Ghost in the Machine. Talk about aesthetic pleasure!

Wow! When I compare what's available now to what was there say even six or seven years ago, it just boggles the mind!!!!  I live in Toronto, and the stuff you can get here at relatively low costs is astounding... Just yesterday I picked up a VHS tape of Robotech for just a buck!  8)  The local basic cable channel YTV broadcasts a series of animes (Naruto, Inuyasha, One Piece, Fullmetal Alchemist and the like....) However, I wonder how much cutting they'd had to undergo in order to be "shown" on basic cable???  Sometimes with most of these anime, it's like going from the hands of a top-notch couturier into the hands of anyone who knows how to operate scissors....

I was born in Korea, and since it's so close to Japan, we always got a lot of anime since...I don't know...I think in 70s or something. (I myself was born in 88) So a lot of you might not be familiar with the ones I enjoyed in my childhood. I remember being really fascinated by

-Kaiketzu Zorro(快傑ゾロ)
-Rose of Versailles(ベルサイユのばら)
-Junisenshi Eto Rangers(十二戰支 爆裂 エトレンジャ-)
-Time Travelers(たいむとらぶる トンデケマン)
-魔道王グランゾト  (I don't know its english title)
-Saint Tail(怪盜セイント★テ-ル)
-Slayers (original, NEXT, TRY)
-Crayon Shin-chan(クレヨンしんちゃん)

The Hero series
- The Brave of Sun Fighbird(太陽の勇者 ファイバ-ド)
- The Legendary Braves DaGarn(傳說の勇者 ダ·ガ-ン)
-The Brave Police JDeckar(勇者警察 ジェイ·デッカ-)

so...if you want a good, old anime, these are the ones I really enjoyed when I was young (and I still do!)

This is quite an impressive list!  Except for Rose of Versailles, I've never heard about any of them!  What's the Hero series about?

I got started on anime after I met my current boyfriend 3 years ago. He was into all of the "plotless fighting" animes so whenever I hung out with his group of friends I'd get stuck watching them. It was almost enough to make me hate anime actually, until I discovered one day that there was a whole world of other better genres to choose from. I've been hooked ever since ;D

When I was little, anime was just the same as any other cartoons I saw on Saturday morning or right after school (4pm used to be the haven for high quality toonin', y'know?). The first two I can recall that I really dug on was Voltron and G-force (they call it Battle of the Planets, right?), closely followed by ol' DiC Sailor Moon (the horror!) and some Speed Racer.

Once I got the internet when I was twelve or so, and started noticing..hey..there's MORE of this stuff? Huh! I really got bitten. Toonami helped that along, too, haha. But once I got hooked on the Pokemon cards, that not only fueled my anime cravings, but my desire to draw.

But man, I'd love to see some ol' G-force for nostalgia's sake...Jun was my hero!

Many a moons ago when I was 10 my mother's Boyfriend introduced me to devil hunter Yohkko on VHS...then came Vampire Hunter D, Akira...and eventually Ghost in the shell.

The first series I saw on television was Ronin Warriors(english name)  I forget what station it came on but I saw nearly the entire series and thought it was sooo much better than the American cartoons we had at the time...

last year I DL Monster and was almost in disbelief to how deep the characters were...I saw a live action was suppose to me made but never was...I suppose 71 episodes is hard to condense. And me personally I found all 71 to be important to the story development. The ending still confuses me though...long live Dr.Tenma

fast forward to today and my eyes are glued to Death Note and Bleach

If you are from the states you started off watching Voltron and Speedracer and you didn't even know it.  Thundercats is an American animated Tv show.  But What got me hooked was that like the previous poster stated a long long long long time ago like 11-15 years ago some affliated stations use to run Monkey Magic and ORIGINAL Dragonball stupid early in the morning like on Sunday and Saturday and thats when the bug hit my butt. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monkey_Magic_%28animated_series%2

I have to admit to having watched Voltron and Speedracer as a kid without the slightest idea that they were from Japan. What really did it for my though were the reruns of Robotech when I was about 4. My parents also claim I watched Astroboy, but I have absolutely no memory of that.

I do remember thoroughly enjoying Sailor Moon on YTV (So sue me, a ten-year old doesn't care about dubbing quality) and not being able to rent Bubblegum Crisis because it had nudity in it. I also saw an old movie called Odin: Photon Space Sailor Starlight. It was... odd.

The other show that I saw just a few episodes of and really want to see again was the Thunderbirds anime. It was a great show. And it had trailers for the Lensman anime that I will never ever get to see.  :'(
My mind is like a sieve. It retains all sorts of interesting bits and lets the important stuff flow straight through.

Yes, as we all know Vash has retired. It's over and done with, lets let it go. And even if we were to talk about it, it has absolutely no relevence to this thread. Can we stay on topic a bit more please? :-\

Okay. I guess someone pouncing on me for something about that retirement while I was trying to post something relevant to the topic here got me to post that instead.

What I originally meant to post was this:

Something I forgot to say, what got me into anime other than Kids Station was a new TV with cable TV hyperband. That is, you don't need to subscribe to a cable provider to get access to cable channels. Cable TV isn't that popular in Japan. People are just happy with the normal channels they have and a lot of them have BS Digital Satellite, that is where they broadcast anime in HD. So when I got that TV and found a Cable TV channel called Kids Station, I began watching some reruns of old animes. Eventually I got hooked to Conan on NTV and CCS on NHK and that got be started into the latest anime being shown in the normal TV channels.  :D

For me, I never watched anime on TV as a child.  I first heard of it when I joined a Harry Potter message board about 5 years ago.  A few of my friends on there kept talking about this Rurouni Kenshin show, so I finally decided to ask about it.  One of the girls was also watching InuYasha at the time, and she informed me that InuYasha was airing on Adult Swim in the US.  So, I tuned in to Adult Swim and got hooked on IY.  (I also downloaded the Kenshin OVAs, which I absolutely loved.  But IY was technically my first anime.)

Note: I live in Australia.

My first anime would have (sadly :P) been the english dubs of Sailormoon on Channel 7's "Cartoon Network" morning when I was 5-8 (1996-1999).

Second (what I consider my first "Real")anime was Neon Genesis, dubbed, on SBS in 2000 .

That was the last anime I saw for several years, one night I got bored and found an anime stream on WinAMP TV in 2004, (Onegai Teacher), I downloaded that, then downloaded Onegai Twins, then I kinda left Anime again for a bit, now in 2006 I'm Anime Crazy after I discovered one of my friends at school watches it, she gave me several Anime series (Chobits, Full Metal Panics) and I official became addicted to anime and proceeded to download as much as my download limit would allow, and about 2 weeks ago, the same friend gave me The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, so yes, very addicted ^_^ .

I can't remember what my first Anime series was.  It was like DB or DBZ.  As a child I watched Anime on and off, never really keeping up with any particular series regularly except for around 6th grade when the Pokemon craze started...

I guess you could say my first "moe" experience was with Misty from Pokemon, which amuses me to this day because Tsundere characters are still my favorite.  Anyways, after I got over the Pokemon phase I really didn't watch Anime much at all, except occasionally I would watch Gundam Wing and that Anime with the ditzy Galaxy patrol chick.

It wasn't until senior year of HS that a friend from my Warcraft III Clan gave me a link to a site with DDLs to fansubbed Naruto.  I watched like the first season on and off and didn't really get into it at first because college applications and all that jazz kept me preoccupied.  However, after starting my freshman year of college I started watching it again and I got hooked.  I made it up to like episode 168 and started feeling the fillers, so that's about the time I started appearing on IRC and engrossing myself in the Anime community.... consuming series after series... I also attribute my insane consumption of Anime to my posse... yeah I have a posse - they're a bunch of Anime otaku at my Uni lawl.

In finland it is a "CULT" thing to have seen NGE and so it was a must for me too. Evetually at the same time i were able to get myself a whole bunch of other anime series and chose some that i liked by the first appearance. Eventually i ended up likeing some of them. Im still at the "start of my journey" but this including the fact that i registered on this messageboard and joined you on the irc made me move onwards towards a whole new world filled with anime.
If you want to criticize someone you should first take a ten mile walk in their shoes, because when you then criticize them you are at a safe distance from them and you also have their shoes.

i,m so sorry to say i started out because of my best friends who were twins
They were reading the chinese naruto manga.
I myself am horrible at chinese despite being one but i couldnt help
myself because that book was rather interesting. I do visit anime forums
and there are people that bitch about Naruto not being like an anime and stuffs
but when it comes down , how many people have the ability to create such a storyline?

But once i finished watching Naruto i went to backtrack and watch shows like HxH and Rose of Versailles.

The soundtrack of RoV is written by Yoshiki ^^ hes so cool ~
Blow your mind ~
