Leeching & Technical Problems / mplayer playing death note too fast

I just started watching some stuff on my linux laptop the other day (ubuntu 6.10), and came down to death note in my rotation of things I watch. However, it was not cooperating very well with the mplayer I just compiled last night. I just built it from the latest release source (1.0rc1-4.1.2), and it has been handling everything else very well.
The odd part is, it seems to play normally if I go to the command line and launch it like:
Very strange indeed!
Has anybody ever come across this? Is there anything I can post to help find a solution?
*cringe* I guess it's back to VLC for tonight

mplayer \[Live-evil\]_Death_Note_12_\[8F9A53FE\].avibut not if I launch it from clicking the video file from the file browser...Very strange indeed!
Has anybody ever come across this? Is there anything I can post to help find a solution?
