Title: Got a kick ass computer?
Post by: greenkabbage on October 08, 2004, 04:04:25 am
Yes? Great!
No? Great!

If you have your computer on 24/7 because you are an internet/anime/chat/pr0n junkie or because you can't find the OFF button anymore, please read on.

I have been donating my computer's spare cycles to a good cause. I'm having my compute crunch millions of numbers while I sleep, eat, shower, walk about, watch anime, translate anime, think about sex, chat on IRC/AIM/ICQ etc.
I think you get my drift. Anyways, I'm having my computer fold proteins. What's the point you ask? Well by doing thing we might find cures for all sorts of diseases that are not curable right now. It's for a good cause, and my computer stays on all night anyways. The software that does all this for me sits next to my clock in the system bar and crunches numbers silently, always yielding to other programs so that they may take me to the WWW super information highway or show me anime.

If you are interested in helping science leap ahead, please go to http://folding.stanford.edu/ and download the appropiate client for you. You can read more about the project there as well.

If you want, you can join the team I started with my friend. Join if you <3 food, just like we do.
Our team ID is 38287, that's what you have to put in your client if you wish to <3 food with us. We fold proteins because we <3 food.

Impressive fact: the power of distributed computing is larger than that of any supercomputer in the whole world.

Go LE Forum junkies!

how come when I do a topic about distributed processing and what everyone uses or thinks.. NADA?

I'm planning on starting the protien folding after I get done with my 50 or what ever model cycle of the world's weather.  I'm at a lack luster 28% after 250 hours.  It would help if I didn't run so much crap on my server along with that.

like my new fav joke distrib. processing page.  requires Java though

http://user.tninet.se/~ecf599g/aardasnails/java/Monkey/webpages/index.html

Honestly you don't have to keep it open, but it is worth the read.

laptop folding is not good.   Well it is just slow.  But seeing as I have turned off most of the other computers in the house except for one that is running a project for climateprediction.net   It will be a while before I can shut that thing down.  405hours at the current count.

by the folding I should be done in about 6 days?  kind of pathetic but hey it is an OLD laptop.

first folding done. not really bad since I'm using the laptop as a main computer all the time.  Watching Anime really slows down the folding.  ooh well I never offered to be fast at folding, just offered to let it do folding.

so that is one more Unit done for the team. Cheers.

yay! i have my computer at work crunching numbers too. too bad its only got 600 or 800 mhz. and 384 mb ram >_< it's completed a few units though. weee

mine would be doing better if it wasn't my main computer while I'm in the middle of moving.  I might have to get some others set up to do crunching.

I got my second unit done and am on the 3rd one. if I would check progress I would know this stuff sooner.. I've passed  DeadAlready911.

I must be working really fat work units because I only did 2 of them and i have a higher rating than people with 3?

I gave away 4 others that I had running.  one of them was a dual proc in fact.  ooh well.

I'll see what I can swing.
