Title: galaxy railway
Post by: rasha on October 10, 2003, 08:18:38 pm
wow! talk about an action packed first episode! it was sad too tho.  It seems like it'll be a very interesting series..but how do those trains get into space without any booster type things? :)

anyone else watch this yet?

Yep. It's based on the old Matsumoto's "Galaxy Express 999", a long and EXTREMELY SAD anime.

The design of the father/captain and the fact of his eye are based on Matsumoto's Captain Harlock.

i'm not familiar with matsumoto's previous work, and i'm really not sure what i think about galaxy railways (yet).  the first episode was cool, but seeing steam trains fly through space seemed so odd that it was distracting :)  what happened at the very end of the episode really surprised me... i wasn't expecting that to happen!

To all the brave folks at LiveeviL and AonE;

Thank you for subbing and distributing Galaxy Railways!  This show has all the makings of a classic!  All my favorite Matsumoto themes:  Follow your Dreams; Never Quit despite The Odds; It's the Journey, Not the Destination... oh, and Bad-Ass Spaceships!^_^

I don't know what I can do to help with this project, but if there's anything I can do to keep it going let me know.  This show ROCKS DA HOUSE!  I eagerly await episode 2.

About the tech in the show:  Back in GE999, we found out that in this time (circa 29th century), engine and life-support technology far outstrip what we know here in the ancient past. Form no longer follows function, and energy generation is so great and cheap that spacecraft can be designed according to the owners' esthetics.

The Galaxy Express ships use special fields both for propulsion and life support.  The green glow around the trains as they enter atmosphere is the ionization caused by this "binder field".  It provides limited interia control (so the trains can take "curves" without breaking up), as well as defense ability (note that the enemy gunfire glances off the field, rather than the train itself).  The field effect also keeps a bottle of atmosphere around the train, so don't be surprised if somebody opens a window in the series...

In short, it's Matsumoto "black box" technology that requires going back in the stacks to get snippets of information (as I show my age by saying I've seen the GE999 series).^_^

Anyway, this show is DA BOMB, and it's got all the makings of the next Space Cruiser Yamato in popularity!  Domo Arigato Gozaimasu to L-E and AonE for bringing this show to us!!!

I really enjoyed this first episode, there are quite a few interesting themes as well.

Just to let people know, the orginal 'Galaxy Express 999' is featured in one of the greatest movies of all time.  It's called 'Sunless' and has a large section about Japan in it.  If you're a bit of a Japanophile and want  to check out some early 1980s styles and things then you have to see this film.

Omg the first ep was definatly everything i could have hoped for.I love the wonderful classic designs and the father did look remarkably like Harlock too(YAY).My son had to watch it with me, and he was just amazed, he's kind of a morbid little guy but you can never underestimate the allure of steam engines and space to a young boy right? I just think it's fantastic I remember galaxy express and harlock as a kid you know and it's just really cool to see this new series.I'm already addicted i can't wait for more.

Greetings! I wanted to thank you lot for doing a great job subtitling some terrific series, including Galaxy Railways and Rose of Versailles!  Like Newton Ewell, as another relative oldtimer, it warms my heart to see some attention being paid to classic older shows that hooked me and people of my generation on anime, and inspired a lot of the younger anime creators out there today.

I was a member of the "Star Blazers generation", and so the works of Leiji Matsumoto have had a profound impact on my life.  So, naturally, I'm quite happy to see the interest in this latest (and one of the best, IMHO) incarnation of the Matsumoto-verse, "Galaxy Railways".

Having done subtitling myself (in the mid 90s, when we subbed to videotape, I was part of the first group to ever subtitle Miyazaki's "Future Boy Conan") I know how taxing it can be, and how irritating the hangers-on who always want to know when it will be finished but contribute nothing are.  However, since it has been a while (and since I am sharing your work this holiday season with several friends who don't have a fast enough computer or Internet connection to watch the Divx files, by exporting the fansubs to a video DVD) I was wondering -- when will we see the next episode?!  ;D

I made this comment (http://forums.animesuki.com/showpost.php?p=27826&postcount=13) over on the AnimeSuki forum thread (http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=1228&page=1&pp=20), where I believe your translator noted it for future episodes, but I'll just throw it out here as well... one very minor nitpick:  In the later episodes Mamoru is revealed to have joined the "Space Panzer GRENADIER", not the "Space Panzer Grenada", as it has in the subs.  Matsumoto is a major WW2 history buff and would know everything there is to know about German tank battalions!

Actually checking back on that thread the translator suggested bugging AonE to get the next episodes.  I'd love to do that, but how does one contact them?  See, you guys have this handy-dandy forum where we can come and whine, so you make it easy...  ;)

It should be taken as a testament to my awesome power as the Cosmo-Führer that within hours of my posting the previous message, the torrents for Galaxy Railways 5 and 6 were made available via AnimeSuki.  ;)

I promise to only use this power for good.

LiveviL Lords:

Thanks for eps 5&6 of Galaxy Railways!  We're still out here, and we're still groovin' on the show.  ;D

Please keep them coming!  The show only gets better as it goes on.  On the subject of old-school hotties (earlier post), Yuki (the medical officer) is my first anime crush.  I love this show, and please keep bringing it!

Help, help ! Well, I do hate people who just come to a forum to ask for help, but this time I do need some ^^

I've just downloaded GR 5 & 6, but I can't make them work. I've tried to install ffdshow, I've already installed a bunch of codec, but with these 2 episodes, it's the first time I see Windows Media Player simply crashing...

Does anybody got the same problem? Did he/she manage to make the episode work?

I'm a big fan of all Matsumoto's work, and I want to be able to see GR T_T

And to LE: Keep up the good work!! ^^

Yeah I had the same problem I just ended up unistalling DivX and XviD codecs and installing just DivX. I'm kind of new to making avis and stuff but I think there was a conflict with DivX and XviD when trying to play them.

I didn't have a problem, but then I am using a Mac and watching them using either the Quicktime Player with Divx 5.0 and 3ivx codecs installed, or with my favorite standalone Divx/avi video program, VLC.  I avoid Windows Media Player like the plague (that goes double for RealPlayer).

Seriously, I think the simplest way to watch these things on your computer without having to fiddle with codecs and crap is to use VLC (http://www.videolan.org/) (VideoLanClient).  It's free, open-source software, seems very well engineered, and is available for every OS you've ever heard of (and some you probably haven't!)  Windows, Mac OS, most major flavors of Linux, even BeOS!!  The Windows interface looks quite nice and easy to use too (a bit better laid out than the Mac interface).  Here is the download page (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/), just pick your favorite OS.

Holy shmoley!  There was even a new point release TODAY!  I just saw this now while double-checking to make sure I had the URLs right above!  Guess I'll be downloading this latest update too!  Thanks for posting this question or I might not have seen this notification for a while!  ;D

I know it's always like this, but does anyone know when episode 7 is coming out. I have just downloaded Galaxy Express 999, I've been trying to find it for about 3 years. I hae bought Arcadia of My Youth on DVD and Harlock Saga, Queen Emeraldas and Maetel Legend. I'm a HUGE fan of Matsumoto... I have been since I saw GE999 on Teletoon... Now if anyone can find Adieu Galaxy Express... you would be me hero for a day, or possibly more.

By the way great job on the show, I find it follows the other series well. I can't wait to see if Harlock is in this.

I thought "WOW", finaly this great series will be released!

Now, I came here, reading that you already have up to Episode 6 (where can I get them?)
And that the first Episode was released many months ago.

Why has nobody told me?!?

So please tell me, where can I get these files

Regrettably there is some problem with the latest encodes of this series because of the default settings in the latest release of Xvid.  It causes serious heartburn for a lot of players.  please check out the Galaxy Railways problems thread over in the Leeching & technical problems (http://forum.live-evil.org/YaBB.cgi?board=leeching;action=display;num=1076306112) discussion, and also see this thread (http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=7964) over on the AnimeSuki tech forum.

For a moment, I was afraid Galaxy Railways had been stopped. It's always possible for a serie to be licensed, and in a very short time, two new episodes are available, what a relief! This is certainly one of the best series out there, I've always been a big fan of Matsumoto, and this one is really great, technically perfect and somehow as sad as Matsumoto's other works. All I can pray is that this serie will not be licensed before you end the sub, as I live in Europe and it's a real pain to find US DVD...

SUPER INSIDER SCOOP!!!
Tofu has translated a bunch more episodes and now aone is the one to blame ;D  So it probably won't be a gilgamesh style release, but more like a "they will be released once aone finishes their work on them" release. Now all that fancy formatting was useless wasn't it? I was kind of trying to capture the nature of the previous posts in it...
People... if we have an episode ready it will be released. We don't have a big, fat X on our calendar where it says: release GR episode 14. (or any other episode of any other show) Your questions don't really lead to anything  ::)
Instead of asking pointless questions like: "When will ep ## of show X be released", you should spend your time on the forum discussing the latest episode of your favorite show or something. Didn't get a part of the episode? Ask here. That's what the forums is here for.

Just a tiny question about episode 16..

How come the episode name, and Yuki's explanation of what she really is were changed?

The Episode title was changed from "Sexaroid" tp "Android", and when she explains what she is to the man she saved, she tells him about being a Medic Android, rather than a Sexaroid.

How come you guys changed it? I thought it was a really nice homage to one of Matsumoto's first manga.

Well, I don't have any DEEP info on it, but one of his first, relatively successful sci-fi works was called Sexaroid, it has to have been one of his, earliest works, before he started to work on Harlock, Senen no Joou, and Ginga Tetsudou 999.

It's pretty hard to find any info on that one, sadly.

Sexaroid was published 1974, 4 Volumes. published in Asahi Sonorama's „Sun Comics“

It was reprinted in 1992.

It has nothing to do with the great "Leijiverse" of Harlock, Emeraldas, Yamato or Queen Millenia.

Still, I wonder why the parts of the episode were mistranslated/changed, in the first place. o_o

Does the translator not like the fact that Yuki's a Sexaroid, or what?
Title: Re: galaxy railway

Well, here is the long and the short of it.

I was translating this show one day (yes, I am the one and only translator for this show :x) and I come across this word "sekusaroido". So I go, "Huh? What in blazes can that be?? Hmmm.... <checks electronic dictionary> <checks online dictionaries> <searches google> Ah, here this is great japanese page explaining what a sekusaroido is!" Of course, the explanataion for what a sexaroid is would be VERY similar to what the explanation for android is, so I (and here is the key phrase here) ASSUMED that it was just a fancy word for Android, so I translated it as such.

No malice was intended, I just missed the reference. It happens :( Now I need to get my hands on the Sexaroid manga :D

That does make sense, yeah. XD

Well, the only other time, I remember the term sexaroid to be used, was in the original Bubblegum Crisis OVA, in the episode Moonlight Rambler and Red Eyes, where a couple of sexaroids flee from the Genaros Space Station, and one of them becomes friends with Priss, etc.
Back in Bubblegum Crisis, Sexaroids were simply.. (As the name implies) Android "sextoys", they were basically hookers you didn't have to pay more than once, if you catch my drift. ;P

It wouldn't be TOO far off that Yuki was built for that intention, but it's probably just the homage at the Sexaroid manga.
