Title: Mysterious Cities of Gold
Post by: gumbaloom on September 19, 2006, 10:46:16 am
It's come to light due to a recent thread on AnimeonDVD that the show Mysterious Cities of Gold's licensing status looks very in question.

Yeah it got dubbed and everyone remembers that but it's been so long since it aired and the total lack of info / legitimate English DVD release / no knowledge of who owns the English righs or if they've expired has lead Animesuki to say that if someone subs it they will (unless someone comes forward and sends nasty C&D letters) consider it an unlicensed show and list it.

Hence I'm laying down the gauntlet. If any J->E tl'ers here love the show so much. If they volunteer their services as tl'er for it Live-eviL will sub Mysterious Cities of Gold with original Japanese audio track and direct J->E tl's and I will go out and buy the R2J's.

What says you all?

-gumbaloom
(Don't you start Tsubasa - I'm not gonna guesslate this I"m asking for tl help and it will only start if we get a tl'er volunteer :P :P :P)

Haha,
/me always does the opposite of what she is told.

Well, what happened with Deathnote while you were gone is the answer. Some other staff might go  :o :o, and convince an already-busy-with-t/l-responsibilies to sub and declare staff confirmed. Hence increasing the chance of reducing the release rate of the older stuff. Well, this is rather unlikely in case of this very old show since people won't categorize it as 'likely to bring new fans to L-E if we sub it'.

As for recent shows, I don't might translation checking occasionally provided it won't get in the way of smooth progress of my other projects, but I really think we should only do them when we're doing them joint, the t/l and qc being the other group's responsiblity.

As for this one, get a decent, fluent, and fast t/l with some hours to give to us and who is really motivated.

That's terrible news. I was going to buy the DVDs when they came out. I've been looking forward to this for quite some time.

Which means I would love to see this get subbed.

Maeterlinck`s Blue Bird is the title. Maeterlinck being the author of the original play.

There's an excellent unoffical 8-DVD set of MCOG floating around. The author of this DVD set is selling it from his homepage: http://home.comcast.net/~skutt/mcog.html

This DVD set is excellent. It's got most (if not all) of the missing scenes that were cut from various versions etc (there's a list of these if you follow the link above). It's IMHO waste of time translating this.

It's also been officially released on DVD in France, Belgium, Japan, Canada and Germany.

MCOG is probably my most favority series of all time.

I think (read: THINK) a friend of mine has em, I'll check with him, maybe it's some sort of a start...

You hardly need a translator; there was a perfectly functional English script made in the 80s ;)  Besides, it could be a French or Japanese translator, as it was a Franco-Japanese production.  I cannot believe there is no English DVD release of this for, as mentioned, there are so many of us out there who would love to see it!
Title: Re: Mysterious Cities of Gold
Post by: Blue Mage on March 14, 2007, 12:03:27 am
The English dub was... painful. It does appear that the scripts were originally written in French, which would certainly make life easier (though all the storyboards were done in Japanese). For best results, we'd actually have a French translator and Japanese translator working in parallel from their respective raws. That might be a little effort intensive, but it might be possible to check using either the French or Japanese versions.

And there has never been an English DVD release for the series. The French version was released in Canada, but that's it for R1 releases.

I asked my friend, & she says her dvds have french audio, she wasn't sure about subs (she'll check), so at least I'll be able to get my hands on the original script (be it in audio)

Hmm, a source said that the French version is a bit different from the Japanese one. Gumb found this:

Taken from http://www.lescitesdor.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=427
"Translation:
In the Japanese version, you see some different alternate scenes, or let's say added (Esteban's dream in episode 2, for example), the music track is different, and there's supposedly differences when it comes to the script as well ( the Olmèques are clearly presented as aliens)... I have the Japaense dvds, but, since there aren't any subs, and I speak Japanese as bad as a spanish cow (lol)....
but in the last issue of the fanzine "the children of sun", there's a rather complete article on the subject."

So if MCoG is being done, it HAS to be the Japanese version.

Post by: Blue Mage on March 19, 2007, 12:49:37 am
We did discover that later on. However, that we have to do the Japanese version doesn't equate. The original story is in French, not Japanese, and doing it from the French is perfectly possible. Thankfully, I have fairly cheap access to the Canadian release of the French DVDs. And will probably end up buying them anyways cause I really liked the show in French. :)

Understand that the staff interested in doing MCoG are still considering our options. We'll pick a method and stick with it.

I also enjoyed it in French, but for various reasons never got around to seeing it whole as a child and never really gave it any thought until now.  That would really be an awesome anime to bring to people that speak neither French nor Japanese :P

Hi guys,

The editing is different from one version to another. Multiple tracks would be tricky because in the Japanese version, some scenes are extended. It is looking like we will have to use either the French version or the Japanese, but not both. Seing as we are an "anime fansub group" I would guess that we would use the Japanese version.

One thing to note: If we did use the French version, I would be able to remaster the audio. We have the French version of the OST, but the Japanese version is extremely rare and nearly impossible to get.

We shall see what happens with this one.

BIG NEWS!!!!

The Japanese version is now in joint production between Live-eviL and MinorJaNai (MJN). MJN is providing the translators and the R2 DVD raws. It's a wonderful day for fans of this long awaited series. By the way, they have also provided a copy of the Japanese OST in STEREO. A 5.1 remix/remastering has become an option!

Thanks to Mendinso and Athanor for making this possible.

If you translate it will you also include the short documentaries after each episode?

In any case, I've seen it in German and this is one of the shows (just like Rose of Versailles, Ulysses 31, Nils Holgerrson, Count of Monte Christo, Jack and the Beanstalk etc) that are better heard dubbed rather than in Japanese. The English dub was also good.

But I'll watch a few episodes anyway.

Well, the next episode previews were originally recorded in japanese, but were scrapped for the rerecording of the show for the 1998 broadcast. This is the version on DVD. My guess is they didn't want to get involve with redubbing the next episode previews for whatever reason.

I'm going to attempt to hunt down the 1982 recordings for the show. If not... It's not a big deal without the next episode previews, but it is a pitty.

As for the documentaries.... We'll keep you posted.

I remember this series very well also. I even went to the trouble of hunting down, just this past year, the short documentaries that were produced and found a set of all 39 in English. They were narrated by the VA for Mendoza. Unfortunately, they were all in RM format (second or third gen tape maybe) and the ends are clipped off abruptly. On only one of them do I even hear the end theme music begin after the doc. I'm guessing that they were produced for English language but never shown here, although they might have been seen in England or elsewhere. Judging from the music placement, it seems that they might have been placed between the preview and the end credits.

Yes, this is the French version dubbed into English. The Japanese version is different in a few major ways, the biggest being that it has a different music track performed by an orchestra. There were also a few scenes in the French version that were not in the Japanese and vice-versa. I'm just wondering if they will include the end documentaries.

Oh i see now.

Thanks for the explanation.   Yeah i have seen englsh MCOG but I wanna see French or Jap version as i didnt like english dub very much.  >_>  Ah well, I hope that the new remake MCOG series (72 or 78 episodes) will be much better this time :)  (along with a MCOG movie which is compilation of old MCOG series apparently).

Anyway thanks again for the explanation/updates.

Cheers
