Title: Karma
Post by: bobby6 on November 06, 2006, 10:00:37 pm
It would be really lovely if the specifics of the new karma feature could be explained in detail so that everyone knows how it all works and whats going on. :D I've gotten a bunch of questions about it, so maybe just explaining all of the details about it for the sake of clarity would be a good idea.  ;) Also, is there really a way you can tell who gave you good or bad karma?  ???

The problem is, some people want or value negative scores more than positive ones, and (are) even holding a contest for who can get the most negative score; so a system that was supposed to encourage good behavior (and positive scores), in reality the end result is that it ends up promoting bad behavior.

Well, the only reason I asked is because I noticed a comment from someone which seemed to indicate that they knew who had given them karma points and how many. So I was just curious. That is all.  :D

You're talking about my little signature here. The only reasons I always know who gave me the bad karmas is because
1) I know who are acutely irritated by me here, whether they got any reason or not.
2) I always know the time I get each of my karmas so I always have an idea who did it.

If it was a good karma, I wouldn't know whom although I can sure make good guesses (like I'm doing for the SAT critical reading section >_>).

Anyways, a karma, bad or good, doesn't indicate any good/bad behavior. It's just as corrupted as the anidb voting system only you cannot take advantage of good karmas, that is, say you got a problem with someone, you can just give him/her a -1. whether that person is actually behaving bad or not. A bad karma just reflects the extent to how the rest of the staff feel about you. Okay?  :)

actually the true essence of the karma system is one to promote good on the outside but this reminds me more of gambling its easier to put down someone else then it is to bring yourself to the top the only way to bring yourself to the top is to have accomplishes which just makes this a game of side vs side :D

I assume this "karma" can only be given/taken away by a person after a period of time or post counts?
That is to say I haven't located anywhere I could give bad or good karma to anyone.

I think you need at least 50 posts to give or take away karma. It's an incentive to stick around and talk more lol.  ;)

Karma system... Immensly funny if you ask me ;D
I give it a "thumbs up" and i just have to try to introduce this to a forum i am administrating.

A different karma definition:
Karma is the name of a great waterfall in the book "Brothers Lionhearth", made by Astrid Lindgren, and is a home to the ancient waterwyrm Karm which is the opponent of the ancient dragon Katla who is the mother of all dragons. BTW if you ever come across this book you have to read it.

Hi Larry,
btw I thought you weren't much of a computer person? Yet you seem to be a constant contributor to forums considering that other forum you're talking about. Do not underestimate yourself.  :)

Writing doesn't need much knowledge of computers. And generally administration only needs nerwes that can take abuse.
Or wait a sec, maybe i just owerestimated everyone else? Maybe most of the people already have a hard time trying to write...  :P

ps. No offence to anyone.

Hmm, yeah. These forums are supposed to be abuse free so if you were moding it, what else would you be looking for?
