Title: Unexpectedly good films...
Post by: Spymon on June 03, 2004, 10:26:44 pm
I rented Goodbye Lenin yesterday, a truly fantastic German film about the fall of the Berlin wall.  Very funny, very sad and doesn't hide from the politics.  It also feels like a very personal film.  Definitely worth watching.

they translated it into english? I wanted to watch it with my girlfriend but she doesnt know german...  :-/

I'd been looking to see it for a while. It was always on in Paris, but having minimal skills in both French and German it was a no no.  Then I just popped into my local and crappy Blockbuster video and there it was nicely subbed into English.

I got Minority Report and Gangs of New York on DVD today.  Nice and cheap and good.

I might rent Swimming Pool at the weekend, I'll let the two people who post here know if it was any good.
Title: heathen!

Army of darkness a crap movie?!  :o
heathen! it's a great movie!

today i watched shaft. the remake that is. it was funny :D

good: the big lebowsky (with a pitcher of white russian), american history x, three kings, life of brian, run lola run, american beauty, pulp fiction
there's more but I forget...
Title: Re: Unexpectedly good films...
Post by: crypticgimp on June 05, 2004, 08:50:00 pm
all B movies fall under the "crap" category.  its not a dis tot he movie itself, as i am a HUGE crap movie fan.  try watching Top Secret sometime.

i loved American History X, but never got why Pulp Fiction was so popular.  (look i took time to capitalize today!)
Title: Re: Unexpectedly good films...
Post by: greenkabbage on June 06, 2004, 12:56:02 am
Well pulp fiction is popular because it's a classic. and funny to boot.
another (crap if it's cryptic. good if it's me) movie was from dusk till dawn.
oh, forgot fight club

Post by: Spymon on June 06, 2004, 03:41:52 am
Pulp Fiction is great, shame about the rest of Tarantino's movies.  Not that they are unexpectedly good though.

Almost all the Coen brothers movies are unexpectedly good.

Soderbergh's version of Solaris was unexpectedly good.

Plus anything by Spike Jonze and his wife Sofia Coppola.  Adaptaion was criminally underated and I'm looking forward to catching Lost in Translation again.

I would also mention Wong Kar Wai films but then you know they'll be good before you even see them.

I did enjoy adaptation! And I will have to go see lost in translation at some point. another noteworthy director is stanley kubrik. a clockwork orange anybody?  :D
Title: Re: Unexpectedly good films...

I have the little kubrick box set.  Not sure if he's a true cinematic genius though as much as I enjoy his films.  Goodbye Lenin had a lot of kubrick references in.  Dr. Strangelove is probably one of my favourite films that Kubrick did.  It's just too funny.
Title: Re: Unexpectedly good films...
Post by: greenkabbage on June 08, 2004, 03:46:15 pm
Dr. Strangelove is genius. I mean a guy riding a freaking bomb wearing a cowboy hat? It was histerical. And I love my english teacher for watching it in class :D
Title: Re: Unexpectedly good films...
Post by: Danzig on June 17, 2004, 01:21:14 am
Hmmm... one of my favorite movies has to be Boodock Saints... if you havn't seen it, rent it... if you cant find it in the rental place... go BUY it... I can garauntee you will like it if you like Action/Comedy.  It has a few good stars, and is well directed.  If you liked Pulp Fiction, or Resevior Dogs, I can almost (for a fact), know you will like this movie.

Its about two Irish Brothers that go on a mafia killing spree.  They are cleaning up the streets of South Boston... its SWEET. (Oh yeah It also remided me of Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels for some reason)

Post by: Tofusensei on June 17, 2004, 03:43:41 am
Haha!!

I knew a french girl who LOVED that movie. She made me watch it with her. I have to admit that it is very good. Danzig was right with his suggestion, if you like those kind of movies, you will love the Boondock Saints.

Another movie that I did not expect to like but really fell in love with was Spy Games. I went to see it in the theater on a whim (I didn't even read a single review about it) and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a strange film because it's essentially 2 hours of background info building up for 5 minutes of movie. :)

It seems that 2046 will be out this year for real unless its genius director decides to edit the film into a totally new one.  For now you can view clips thanks to this Dutch website.  http://www.cinema.nl/cinema/persons/index.jsp?persons=6162498

It's about a woman who has a mental illness and the effect it has on her family, and the things that trigger off her breakdown  and the results it causes.

woa..blind man goes on a rampage...that IS cool

spymon's movie sounds good.

Yes, Kitano is always great.  zatoichi was fun, saw that a few months back with some rather yucky subs on it.

I still need to see Dolls.

look cryptic, I added the "real" topic :D
just showed full metal jacket to my gf, that's another good movie (has it been mentioned already) by kubrik.
another movie i enjoyed recently was "the stepford wives" (even though it was a little inconsistent...)
haven't really laughed that hard in a movie theatre for a while... of course that was shrek 2.
if you guys havent seen battle royal you should see it. it's got that japanese girl in it that plays the crazy "spiky metal ball at the end of a chain" weapon wielding subordinate of lucy liu in kill bill.
and yes, i wrote the above to hurt your eyes. :P

You should check out "Eternal Sunshine (of a spottless mind)", the next film from Charlie Kaufman (Adaptation, Being John Malcovich)...

I have seen it... It's has a dark gritty feel, but the story is more lighthearted... It's a good film...

One of my favorite movies of all time is "Jacobs Ladder"... Just a briliant concept IMO...

City of Lost Children is interesting.  Like Amelie and Delicatessen the guy who makes these films, Jeunet (excuse spelling) is amazing at creating worlds but it seems that with the exception of Amelie he wasn't amazing at filling them.

A recent movie for me I had hopes for, was Shawn of the Dead.  After all I always wondered why zombies who walk so slow and can be killed by blunt trauma to the head would be so scary to people.  Zombie comedies are not my usual cup of tea, but it was a decent turn considering recent zombie movies.

For one of my all time favorite movies I walked into knowing nothing about Dark City.  It was pushing the animation and ideas of the time.

Then he gets stuck in a texas chain gang, where they do everything they can to crack his spirits.

Maybe I like depressing. Seeing how bad someone's life can suck makes mine look more appealing?

Nah, I think I liked it because Paul Newman was kind of funny at the start because he always did something to make his time there worse just because he was bored.

I just saw (The) 25th hour with Edward Norton. I'm not really sure if I liked it, but it still has me thinking about stuff. If nothing else it was a good movie because it got me to think. (gasp)

i just saw wimbledon yesterday. it was actually an unexpectedly good movie. it did a very good job conveying the excitement of the tournament. and it had a cheesy but still appreciable love story :x >_> i'm such a sucker

It was a good movie. Wimbledon was amazingly good for what it is.  I liked the brother who places the bets.  But yes it actually made tennis exciting to watch.  Which is amazing for me since I hate sports movies usually.

I have to say it has been a dry week other than that for new movies worth watching. for me.

I watched Dogville the other night, that was an interesting film.  It's narrated like a children's tale and is set in a small American town that resembles a theatre stage.  It seems to be all about America and slaves and capitalism and is rather odd indeed.

The Thing (1982 version by wes craven)  is a great movie. I had forgotten about it till http://www.userfriendly.org started doing a side story about it.  Still has great effects for a movie that aged. Sorta like blade runners backgrounds still look better than most CG backgrounds today.

I kind of like the orginial as well, but this is definately the better movie to watch all the way through.  The 50s version was a movie so lame it has to be a classic.

You know like attack of the how ever many foot Amazon woman. etc.

The blob was great.  Horrid but great.  In that same time frame I always get a kick out of "The day the earth stood still"  I wish they would make a new version but use the correct story where GORT is the master and Klatu was his servent.

The big hit -  It was way more fun than most action movies and honestly Lou Diamond was great in it. "Who could be that stupid?"  as he said himself.  I found it to be just as lame a story as the previews would lead you to believe, but all the people in it were so cartoonish they they were likeable and enjoyable to watch.

Much better than I thought it would be.

I watched this movie called "Smile" yesterday. Heres the IMDB summary.

Introduced to a volunteer opportunity with the Doctor's Gift Program, Katie (Mika Boorem) signs up for a trip to China, where she meets Lin (Yi Ding), a girl with whom she shares a birthday. Lin has a facial deformity that discourages her from ever showing her face, but her friendship with Katie helps her start to see life in a new way.

I was quite surprised at how good it was and the fact that I'd never heard of it before. I think its one of the most realistic views I've ever seen of life in China portrayed in a movie. I started watching it expecting to hate it, but it turned out to be quite good actually. Kind of like one of those low budget films that comes out of nowhere from  the Sundance film festival and ends up being unexpectedly  good.
