So far, Death note, for me, only has good points.

I feel the same way.  Can't say anything bad about this show, but there are other shows I might consider my favorite.  Still, Death Note is definitely in my top 5 and certainly no other anime has made me think as much as this one.

Because I started reading the manga long before the anime started, so I'm thoroughly hooked on the manga .  
Good thing too, since L-E would never have picked up DN if I hadn't wanted to do it and talked everyone else into it 

That's interesting.  Do you feel that your work on the series is influenced by your experience with the manga or are you treating it one episode at a time?

He got this power, and he can use it however he wants. its not possible to tell him he is "wrong" only because he kills, thats not enough when you talk about power that should be belonged to God.
Its not his fall after all its fall of Death Note.

This seems like a good time to quote my favorite scene from the movie Collateral.

Max: You killed him?
Vincent: No, I shot him. Bullets and the fall killed him.

Light is given a power that no mortal should have, I'll give you that.  However, the Death Note didn't force him to do anything.  As noted in the other thread, many people would have just left it on the ground.  Others, after realizing what it was would have destroyed it or locked it away.  Light has chosen to use this power.  I'm not going to give him a free pass just because he happens to have a Death Note.

I suppose "correct answer" is not a good term here.  The point of this exercise is that with few facts, many possibilities exist.  The answer that you come up with is in effect the correct answer for you.  However, the most relevant answer in terms of seeing who has the ability to think like a psychopath is the one given.  Someone who thinks this way has the potential to be a very effective killer.  Another person who can turn this mode of thinking on and off might be well-suited to catching such a criminal.  Remind you of anyone?

Though he has never committed a single act out of 'good' intent, or a single 'good' act, much good has come about because of him, and the world is a better place b'cos the evil man was born, and allowed to live. 

One could argue that even though this hypothetical person is without good intent, he has in fact committed many good acts in your example about capitalism.  On paper this guy is no different than someone who does all the same things as him out of love.  Just as the worst of things can come from the best of intentions, it looks like the opposite case is true here.

Are intentions thus irrelevant?  Obviously not.  You and I can both tell the difference when the intentions are known, but practically speaking, the intentions behind any act committed by someone other than yourself may be unknown and can often only be inferred.  Fiction is a rare case in which all the intentions behind a given act may be known, but in real life this just isn't the case.  I like to believe that good intentions most often lead to good outcomes, just as bad intentions lead to bad, but as you've pointed out there can be exceptions to this.  Thus, society must judge based on actions and not intent. 

This disconnect between actions and intentions can lead us to trouble.  In Light's case, we know not only what he is done, but the reason for each action.  I won't go so far as to say it is easy to judge him, but at least we have all the facts.  However, take a real life case and what do you do?  Since we most often do not know 100% what someone who commits murder was thinking at the time, at best society can only project what the original intent was in deciding a punishment.  Some might reason that the only way murder could be committed is if the perpetrator has no respect for life.  Others might see a circumstance in which it was unpreventable, and thus the person should have a second chance.  There is bound to be clashing as we've seen here already in the debate about the death penalty.

Interesting tale, but it doesn't quite fit.  The discussion is about good vs evil.  In this case, what you refer to as "good" or "bad" could be more accurately translated as "fortune" or "misfortune."  I challenge anyone to assign a value of inherent evilness to a horse running away or a kid breaking his leg while riding.  On the other hand, using the Death Note (<= feeble attempt at staying on topic) to commit murder strikes me as belonging to another category.  Still, it's a great story that gives us something to remember when we are faced with adversity.  Thanks for posting it.

Anyway, I think most of your points are based on ignorance, no matter how much facts you cough up.

it isnt right to kill criminals and felons? i mean no matter who it is they deserve a 2nd chance or perhaps even a 3rd and a 4th etc. Its just not right. But heck its what the anime is about and i love it.

I very strongly disagree with that statement.  I do not believe child killers deserve even a second chance.  Nor do rapists, child molesters, and murderers.  How many innocent victims must there be before we learn that some people will NEVER be able to control themselves in a civilized society? 

I agree with keepergirl.  It simply is not prudent to give certain criminals a second chance.  However, there are some who do deserve another shot, or at the very least do not deserve to be executed for their crimes.  The ones Light killed while watching the TV in the chip bag come to mind.  Their crimes were relatively light, so had they not been killed by Light to give the appearance that he is not Kira, they certainly would not have been executed by the Japanese authorities.  As far as I'm concerned, the only criminals Light is even marginally justified in killing are those already on death row.  Keepergirl may want to lump in rapists here, and I certainly wouldn't shed a tear for one of them, but practically speaking one must follow the law as written.  (Though I would not argue if someone said that certain laws should be rewritten.)

Something xjapan touched upon though, is that even though we know Light's actions to be wrong, there is a certain gratification in watching him, at least at the beginning.  How many times have you seen an individual in public perpetrate some minor atrocity and think to yourself, "wouldn't society be better off without them?"  I know personally this thought crosses my mind on numerous occasions when I'm cut off during my daily commute (or perhaps when someone gives away a spoiler? ).  If, like Light, you were given the power and the opportunity to create your own morality, would you not be tempted to go down the same path?

First off, I realize the writeup has many grammatical errors.  I decided to preserve it as is on the off chance that correcting it would change the results.

The correct answer is indeed that she was hoping that the guy would appear at her sister's funeral.

If you answered this correctly, you think like a psychopath. This riddle was part of a famous psychological test used to see if someone has the same mentality as a killer. Many arrested serial killers took part in the test and answered the question correctly. If you didn't get the right answer, good for you.  However, if you got it right, then you just got L'ed.

Try this simple riddle. It takes less than a minute.

One quick little tidbit of information for ya: There actually WAS no apple mentioned in the bible during the fall of Adam and Eve. It only says "fruit" when referring to the tree of knowledge of good and evil, and so it could have been any fruit, rather than an apple.

Indeed.  That is why I made no such reference to the Bible.

Yeah, in episode 1 Ryuk eats a apple and is totally freaked out about the good taste, because in the Shinigami world nothing has flavour. So light just feeds him apples to keep him happy 

Now imagine if he ever discovered chocolate...

The significance of the apple in the intro fits right along with Christian traditions symbolizing temptation and the fall of man.  This depiction is notable in that it is Ryuk that offers Light the apple in the intro and not the other way around.  If any doubt remains, the apple morphs into the Death Note at the end of the intro as if to say "yes, it really is this obvious."

This begs the question, why is Ryuk the one eating apples in the series?  I think it is just a fun character trait he was given (i.e., Awww, the scary death god is an apple junkie), but if someone really wanted to read into it, they might have an argument that Ryuk's taste for apples parallels his fascination with Light and his usage of the Death Note.

It took me a while to do the conversion since I'm a stupid American, but I think Detroit, Michigan (where I'm from) is the winner so far at negative 7°C.

Is anyone else a bit wary about the upcoming "Tennis" episode?  I guess they'll just have to play their mind games in between serves.
