General Forum / Re: Galaxy Express 999 shorts.

It wasn't easy, but I was able to grab some direct stream rips of these a while back. However since they're only flash uploads, the inherent quality isn't too hot. If there's still any interest in translating these, just let me know and I'll see if I can re-grab them; their sizes were around 15-20 MB if I remember rightly.

I think the issue with Submarine Super 99 is that it IS licensed in English. Just not released. So technically they can't do it.

Submarine Super 99 has indeed been listed on the middleman Enoki Films' website for the better part of half a decade. Somehow I don't think any R1 companies are going to bite at this point, especially since most available translated Matsumoto material on R1 DVD obviously didn't sell well.

But, this has reminded me that there's another production yet to be tackled by any groups yet, The Galaxy Railways II! Sure enough, 24 episodes were done by AonE & F-B, but for some reason they seem to think that's the whole series. 2 further episodes were produced but went directly to DVD only.

Let's look at the stuff we keep working with instead of the past, lots of goodies out there!  :)

With respect, if kaleyboy or anyone else wants to watch Galaxy Express 999, they have every right to watch the series of their choice and not watch an alternative instead.

Also on that note, to kaleyboy and everyone else thinking about pestering Live-Evil to try and make them change their mind - give up. I certainly know I'm giving up. I won't of course, let their edict in the face of Crunchyroll's "licensing" of the series stop me from trying to obtain Galaxy Express 999 episodes with English subs. But neither Live-Evil, Crunchyroll or indeed Toei themselves are either willing or able to do anything about letting people access the series in those few countries outside of the U.S. and Canada.

The only alternative that should be heartily recommended would be to obtain some way of masking one's IP address and circumventing either Crunchyroll's or Direct2Drive's website that way, signing up again through such a method, and simply grab the episodes yourself. It's clear that Toei simply doesn't care, and neither does anyone else. I know it's not fair that we have to jump through so many hoops to actually watch Galaxy Express, but there really is no other way, nor will there be in the future unless Crunchyroll pushes Toei to give them a worldwide license for the series, which is extremely unlikely since they've got so many of the big Japanese companies eating out of their hands due to their new region-locks, etc.

Therefore, I'd suggest that discussion here goes from simply complaining about the lack of Galaxy Express torrents to simply listing which borderline-illegal ways us Europeans can get remote access to Crunchyroll's or Direct2Drive's websites. I myself am looking at using Hide My IP, which is a pay program. However, let's face it, in the face of Toei's obstinacy, no price is too small to pay to get Galaxy Express! :)

If anyone has any other working methods, please let us know!

Think about that for a second...  In the 6 or 7 years since we started this project, we released 30 somethins episodes, whereas Crunchyroll has had over 60 in 2 months and yet you call that stalled?

Actually, Direct2Drive, which has been hosting GE999 episodes since last year (although Live-Evil didn't yank all the episodes at the time then) now has some 85 episodes up on the site, which is no mean feat. For any viewers out there who are able to grab any episodes beyond 33, I salute you - and I hope you appreciate just how very, very, very lucky you are!

In the meantime, the rest of us are indeed screwed since Live-Evil as clearly explained above can't just pick the series back up again.

As for the region lock, there's nothing we can do about that, but obviously there's demand for it elsewhere, so rather than complaining to us about it, why not talk to people and try to get it licensed in your area?  Sure, it's not that simple, but complaining here won't accomplish anything.

Have you seen how many pages the forum post complaining about region locks is on Crunchyroll's site? It was 39 last time I looked, and even then there hasn't been a comment from any of the guys that pose as "shinji" addressing fans' concerns.

Given that Toei isn't going to make these available for anyone else simply due to it not being a concern from them, and also given that I am perfectly willing to pay for legitimate copies of these episodes, I put out out an open call to anyone who has legitimate copies of these series; I will pay double the odds for each episode and give you timed extracted subs as I was able to grab from the few episodes of GE999 as detailed above. PM me if anyone is seriously interested in my offer.

Yes, as a region-locked fan I am that desperate. These shows are 30 years old. No branch of Toei in Europe or anywhere else is going to touch these with a 10 foot cattle prod.

Same here... For me the main difference between a proper DVD-Release and Crunchyblargh is the avaliability.
I live in Austria, so I can't stream that stuff ( also I wouldn't want to pay them for streaming ) - DVDs on the other hand can be imported from nearly everywhere ( if you have the connections ) and I'd pay any price for a GE999 DVD-Set!

So true, I'd gladly pay even Bandai Visual-type prices for an actual DVD set with subs. I tried streaming episodes on Crunchyroll, but the streaming q-q-u-u-a-a-l-l-i-t-t-y-y left much to be desired! :)

It used to possible to grab the smaller flv files, using websites like KeepVid and Clipnabber, for episodes they had up to watch smoothly and in your own time offline as of late January this year. However, CR have since changed how their videos load, and there's no way to directly download the flvs anymore. So now I'm stuck with very stuttered streamed videos as I don't have a dedicated server to purchase any of the region-locked downloads (that is, even if I wanted to!).

We can only hope that one day Toei can see the light, but I kind of doubt it! At least I was able to extract timed subs from the first half-dozen GE999 episodes and first 3 Harlock ones, but until someone works out how to download CR's flv files, I won't be watching any more of these.

You know, I just thought I'd point out that, just because these are exclusive to the US/Canada right now, it doesn't mean that'll always be the case.

I'd be willing to bet several body parts that this probably will be the case. The absurdity of a site that steals other people's fansubs on a regular basis can suddenly implement insurmountable region-locks for series many people worldwide would be willing to pay for is almost palpable. Indeed, this was never about the money; I wouldn't even mind only having isolated English subs to use on the expensive R2 DVDs - like the late lamented ScriptClub used to do before it was canned.

Strange thing though, Harlock and Galaxy Express were far from unlicensed in places like Italy, yet people from those countries could easily download the fansubs along with everyone else until Crunchyroll's "wonderful" acquisition of the two series locked everyone outside NA out. I feel that we can at least ask the legitimate question on what will happen to the existing fansubbed episodes with regard to non-U.S./Canada distribution?

Technically, they're still not licensed in the majority of places outside of NA, just as the few European countries etc. only had the license until a couple of weeks ago, so from that viewpoint, the existing fansubs should technically still be available to us poor plebeians. Have I got my analogies totally wrong?

Well, since that's not going to happen, maybe said fans should try doing something for themselves to make these shows available in their own region(s).

Now this is something that makes sense! :)

I still have the few post episode-36 Galaxy Express subtitle files that were made available on ScriptClub, and have feverously spent the last couple of nights refining their formatting and timing them all, so that could make a half-decent start to such an endeavour for us Crunchyroll-impaired individuals.

The translations for those few episodes are clearly more primitive translations than Live-Evil's GE999 efforts were before they pulled out, but they're better than nothing. Anyone that wants all these timed scripts for any reason can PM me.

Pretty exhaustive list, Labrokratis! There are still a few other productions you can add:

Mirror of Arei: The Way to the Virgin Space (1985)
This was a special short movie Toei made for Expo '85. It was released on video tape and the Japanese-exclusive disc format VHD, but never on LD.

Saint-Elmo: Apostle of Light (1986)
A TV movie made to promote an electricity company of all things, this was also released on video tape, but not LD.

Submarine Super 99 (2004)
One of the newest unlicensed (in English) Matsumoto TV shows, this 13-part series was released on DVD in Japan, and was also given a French DVD release complete with French subtitles.

The same I feel for the Captain Harlock movie Arcadia of my youth. But that one is licenced I think (pitty: That amazing masterpiece with remastered audio would be a great honor to Leiji Matsumoto and all his fans around the world!).

Arcadia of My Youth was licensed by AnimEigo, but I believe that lapsed a while ago. Indeed some of the other previously officially-licensed Matsumoto material is now unlicensed, such as Maetel Legend and Harlock Saga both from the defunct CPM. DNA Sights 999.9 was licensed by Urban Vision, but in their case it obviously goes without saying that they never released it on DVD.

Second in mind, it comes the Yamato Universe. I know that it is licenced (both movies and series), but there is also that one unlicenced telemovie of the first series that exists and fits perfectly to the Leijiniverse (it doesn’t mess with the Kodai timeline, so you can follow the logic that he became the first Captain Harlock, as it happens in the well known manga...). Maybe that rare telemovie, would be of some interest for your team.

I'm not entirely certain what you're referring to with a TV movie of the first Yamato series, but I suspect it was the specially-prepared version that was mostly the same as the theatrical movie, except with shorter, newly-animated ending. This new ending was included as an extra on one of the R1 Voyager Entertainment DVDs.

I can think of at least one other off the top of my head which I am somewhat interested in (mainly because I know so little about it)... Marine Snow no Densetsu.  Maybe sometime in the next few years we'll be able to track down a raw for it or something...

The Legend of Marine Snow, like some of the other older Matsumoto specials, was released on Japanese VHS, but no other format, so raws would technically be available, but obviously not in the best condition.

All in all, I think that covers most of the missing gaps in terms of what other Leiji Matsumoto material is out there, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was even more obscure material just waiting to be unearthed! :)

It was an amazing stretch of well-translated episodes, but I guess all good things must come to an end - especially if you live outside the U.S.

Needless to say, I sincerely hope that we never hear any similar "wonderful" news on Toei "licensing" Queen Millennia or SSX. I would be ready willing and able to throw lots and lots money at Toei to watch these series officially with subs, but now I never can. Anyone willing to pick up the reigns on continuing the English-language fansubs for the few Crunchyroll-locked regions out there? :)

Current & Future L-E Projects / Re: KIMAGURE ORANGE ROAD

but no you suck

On the other hand, I find it hard to totally disagree with smoke123. Kimagure Orange Road is a fantastic series, but was legally available in its entirety with English subs for many, many years. By comparison, none of the awesome 1970s/1980s Leiji Matsumoto series have ever been licensed properly in English, so I'd say its a something of a shame that resources have been diverted to a series which, while admittedly OOP, is still easily available from R1 DVD vendors online, albeit with the original video transfers.

If I was so concerned at getting a better-looking version of KOR, I'd go straight to the uncompressed R2 source, which I've already done! I'm not setting out to cause trouble, but am I totally wrong for thinking along these lines?

General Forum / Captain Harlock/Queen Millennia *dub* torrents
« on: November 12, 2006, 10:55:32 pm »
First of all, since I'm new it might be best to say that I'm a massive fan of all the Matsumoto goodness that Live-Evil have provided so far, and obviously look forward to more of the same in the future! :)

However, while looking up the good Captain Harlock on Wikipedia the other day, I noticed a claim in the entry that there was apparently a fan edit going around using the Harmony Gold mashed-together dub of Captain Harlock and the Queen of a Thousand Years. The really interesting thing about this edit is that both series had apparently been separated into the original two shows.

It took me a while, but there are indeed torrents of these fan edits of both series out there, from an outfit calling themselves Village Video. Further searching has turned up nothing on this shadowy (but skilled!) group, and unfortunately not all of the episodes are currently being seeded, even though they only went up a couple of months ago.

I guess this post is both a) to inform anyone out there who's interested in another take on classic Matsumoto series (since these edits are quite low-key at the moment), and b) to try and find out a little more about Village Video and what else they've done (and indeed, what they may be working on in the future!).
