Bought a Wii.  The sports pack is fun for the whole family.  Waiting for winter break to become addicted to Zelda.

a) How you came to know of us.

Was watching [AonE-AnY]'s "Ah! My Goddess" and on the Animeyuki website there was a glowing review about a little known fansub group doing a great job on a series called "Death Note."

b) What le shows do you watch and why you like them.

Death Note.  Makes you think.  Two geniuses-- one specializing in deception, the other in observation-- go head to head.  Mind games ensue.  What's not to like?

c) What other shows you'd like to try.

No clue.

d) How often you're likely to visit us and post.

Pretty active in the Death Note master thread.   I probably won't stray far from there, although I've been on IRC a handful of times and people seemed nice.

Nice touch on the subs for L's speech.

After watching the last episode I have a new question.  Is it ok for L to hide behind the name of a famous person?  If L's goal is to use an obviously false name to show that he knows of Kira's limitation, he could have accomplished the same thing by using a famous name from fictional literature.  Using a fake name is a prudent precaution given what L suspects about Kira, however, using the name of a real person whose face is well known puts that person at risk.  L might assume that Kira would go through the thought process Light does, which is that he cannot use this name to kill on the off chance he pictures the real Ryuga Hideki, but there remains a real possibility that Kira wouldn't care about that and just kill him anyway.  Perhaps L must use the name of a real person in order to confer that extra level of protection, but if that is so, surely there must be some Japanese equivalent of Kevin Federline that could be used instead in this situation.

He used a piece of lead, or really tiny pencil. I'm not just making this up: he uses it later on in the series, too.

The TV in bag with mini-pencil was a clever idea, but throwing it away the way he did was an unnecessary risk.  An empty chip bag and one with a TV in it do not fall the same way.  When Light dumped his wastebasket, his mother could have noticed something amiss and being a good mother might have checked to make sure Light wasn't accidentally throwing away something important.  Taking it one step further, what if L had dressed up one of his minions as the garbage collector?  I think Light must have realized the risk on some level since he makes sure to watch the trash bags get compacted.  Factoring in the considerable cost, I'll be surprised if we see this method again anytime soon.

The question I've been working on lately is whether Ryuk wants Light to succeed.  The chances of the Death Note falling into the hands of someone more calculating (and thus entertaining for Ryuk) is remote, so should Light ever be captured it would mean the end of Ryuk's fun.  However, I can't shake the feeling that Ryuk only appears to be in Light's corner.  Like a NASCAR fan who's in it for the crashes, the reason Ryuk is hanging around and observing so closely may be to see an eventual defeat.  We saw previously when Naomi gave Light a false name, Ryuk did nothing to assist, though his amusement inadvertently provided a clue.  Was Ryuk really unable to say anything?  Even though he technically is not supposed to interfere, Ryuk later does in fact assist Light when he locates all the security cameras.  Superficially, this is so he can continue eating apples, but I believe the real reason for confirming that there is nowhere to hide from the cameras is to create a challenge for Light.  The key factor linking these two incidences is that Ryuk's actions (or inaction) make things harder for Light and force him to think of some devious solution to his situation.  I think Ryuk's role in the story is too passive to directly lead Light to ruin, but I wouldn't rule out Ryuk failing to help out at a key moment in the future if it meant being entertained.

I'm astounded that there are people who still think his killing is totally justified.  If you are one of them, please identify yourself so I know to never make you angry.

He tries to put himself in risky situations (just think how dangerous was the first encounter with Ray , and the second encounter even more risky).

Hah, just think.  What if she had been just a bit more suspicious and shown him a fake drivers license?

"I'm Kira"

"Shall I consider that your confession?"

"Hey, why aren't you walking off to die?"

Game over biatch.

Wow, now there's a perspective I hadn't considered.  He certainly has god-like capabilities, but I don't think that makes him a god, for two reasons:
1. The powers are not in fact his own. By definition, they belong to the notebook, and without it he is powerless.
2. Most definitions of a "god" include one key point: they are immortal or near-immortal.  Light is neither.

Hehe, I came to the same conclusion, but it was a fun scenario to consider.

Which takes it right back to my point.  Light has developed a god complex. And, because he thinks of himself as a god, he believes that all of his actions fall under the 'absolute right' of "things dictated by heaven."  The question is whether the rest of the world agrees with that perception or not.  ;)

Indeed, this is the force that has been driving the story for some time now.  Light could have masqueraded as a typical student and fooled even a very committed observer, but instead chooses to kill at the first hint of trouble.  Though he outwardly fears capture, he is not content to quietly rid society of its worst criminals.  I believe the impossible task of reconciling his desire to be recognized with the need to remain anonymous is going to lead him to ever more perilous situations.  It has been interesting to watch his god complex evolve from taunting the authorities, to showing a victim his face, and most recently admitting out loud, "I'm Kira."  To Light, removing those that oppose him is no longer a necessary evil.  It is a victory to be relished.

Early on the question may have been whether the rest of the world agreed with him, but it is becoming clear that even though some of the public may give him the benefit of the doubt, people who have kept a close watch on Light's actions (within the show) do not.  A more interesting question might ask if he IS a god.  Light differs from everyone else with a god complex in that he actually has godlike powers.  Certainly the ability to take life does not necessarily translate into the right to do so, but then again, being a god does not necessitate being good either.

I can see why some people still think Light is not so bad, but his days of killing criminals for justice are long gone.  Perhaps somewhere in his head he still thinks all he is doing is making the world a better place, but more and more he is acting out of fear of persecution.  The criminals he kills now are used for learning the capabilities of the Death Note rather than fulfilling some sense of duty to the public, and he has shown that he has no problem using this knowledge against innocent people.  Light has shown himself to be a highly intelligent individual.  A truly just person would try to find a way to continue his crusade while evading capture but at the first sign of trouble Light goes on a killing spree.  Are these the actions of a just man?

As DN goes on, my admiration for Light continues to grow.  My dislike of L's eyes also continues to grow.
You know, none of these innocent people would have died in the first place if the police and L hadn't made 'Kira' out to be their enemy in the first place.  Just a thought.

You may be right, but then we'd have a boring series where a kid studies for exams and kills prisoners in his spare time.  Then again, we cannot forget that innocent people may occasionally become prisoners as well.  Light kills them without a second thought, treating them no better than lab rats in scientific experiments.  His downward spiral into evil is what makes this show so compelling for me to watch.

Kudos to the L-E team.  Another job well done.

I love the plot and characters in this series so much so that I'm beginning to see it as a great detective drama that just so happens to be anime.  I was wondering if anyone could recommend any other series that are similarly enjoyable.
