General Forum / Re: top hated books

I dunno if everyone went crazy about them everywhere else, but inEngland, everyone was obsession about the dan Brown books, like da vinci Code and Angel and Demons, so I thought I'd give them a try.

I got about ten pages into Angels and Demons and gave up. The writing style was so dull and informative, rather than descriptive. it was like reading stage directions, so it's been sitting on my shelf ever since. My dear friend Ruth (may she rest in peace) also agreed with me, as did my sister and mum. Though one of my other firends, ill-informed as she is, has claimed The Da Vinci Code to be the best book ever.

So all Dan Brown books, pretty much

Have jsut seen epsiode 12 and most certaily haven't been let down! I'm so glad to see they've made Misa-Misa blonde. In the opening, it looked like she was a brunette. And that bit where L goes "if you don't take out the part that says 'I don't mind if you kill L', I'll die" and then peered over at Light was like....ultimate fangirl for me. One ofn my favourite bits in the manga, I msut say. It's so brilliant they left it in.

Along with L freaking out about the Death Gods. I suppose if I hadn't read the manga, I'd have thought he was having a heart attack.... How many of you thought he was?

I started watching a couple of years ago. There are a few series' that I thought to be my favourites, such as Gravitation, which I watched about a million times, all at once, until i read the manga and realised how shit it actually was, save for the voice actors (kazuhiko Inoue <3<3). And its actually so difficult to pick one one top one out of all of them, as they all have their good points and bad points. So far, Death note, for me, only has good points. however, I know there'll be bad points coming up, so I can't claim it as a favourite.

I think it'll run the whole way, but after book 7, when ----- is gone, it'll become slightly rushed, as the manga most certainly wasn't as good, nor popular without -----.

the chapters are short at the begninng, and become longer as they go along, I felt. though I'm only up to book 9, so they may indeed become shorter. there are some chapters that were complex, bu not much happened, and other where the plot was simple, but a lot happened. In the anime, there are certain things that won't take as much time to explain.

Book 1 only had 7 chapters, whereas the others, bar 12, have 9 chapters. Book 12 has 11 chapters.

I actually find it genuinely hard to find a favourite anime. I just can't label one, as I know so may great ones. Death note is most certainly top 5, maybe even top 3.

And yus, the anime adaption is really good in comparison to the mnaga. They're kinda rushing it, yet not leaving out any details. I think they left out somethign a while back, or put something in a different oder, but it was somethig hardly noticeable...and I can't even remember what it was, jsut thinking it.

I'm currently listening to the OST (which was released today) and the music is pretty darn dramatic. When watching the episode, I hardly noticed the music, though it probably brought out certain elements of scenes without even really being noticeable, if that makes any sense. I remember when Light wrote in the 'Note, the music made it seem much more...evil? for lack a better word.

I'll presume we're not allowed tog ive details as to where the OST can be found?

Anyway, I think most of your points are based on ignorance, no matter how much facts you cough up.

I would advise against calling people ignorant. It's often thought of as an insult. ¬¬

Oddly somehow related crime that's happening in England right now: five prostitues have been found dead over the last ten days in the Ipswitch area. Police are searching for a mass murderer.

Somewhat like Light's need to clean up the area, perhaps? Police were chacking for sexual abuse a few days ago, when there were only three, but haven't really reported any confirmation, or otherwise on the matter.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/suffolk/6175669.stm

Newspapers in other countries, including papers from New York and Los Angeles are saying there's " shadow of the 'ripper'"

My dad also believes this case to be similar to that of Jack the Ripper.

Of course, it anyone tkes offence or believes this to be unsuitable for the forum, I'll delete this post...

In the UK, gun crimes are almost unknown. Over this summer, a police officer was shot when pursuing some criminals, and it made the front page, as it was such an infrequent event. I don't know about murder rates here, but I know that guns aren't what cause murders that do happen here.

However, we also don't have the death penalty. Maybe, in countries where it applies, the severity of punishment is proportional to the access to the ability to murder? If that makes sense?

The thing you have to realise in the "if you had it, what would you do?" situation is that if you WERE in Light's position, you wouldn't know for sure that the Death note IS real.

Consider, then, if it was an entirely new idea you came across, how would you react to it?

I have this slight belief that you should let whatever is coming, come. Specifically, if there's some way of cheating out of something bad happen by using unjust, or questionable means, then it it almost unfair, in a way, to allow yourself the privelage.

Also, on my view of the death penalty, sometimes, be it in murder, or other things, people get what's coming for them. By no means is that always the case, as there are so, so many innocent people who don't deserve what they get.

but when someone hasn't helped themselves whatsoever in a situation, there's sometimes a point where you have to think "well, they deserved that, really" One of my friends is doing one subject at sixth form (american version: high school) and she's behind, so far that she's been threatened with being thrown off the course, has more free periods than not, and complains she's bored during those.

There are others, including myself, who do four, or even five subjects and aren't behind, nor struggling. I have to say, I find that, if she's chucked out of sixth form, she got what she deserved, for an example. So, in SOME accounts, when someone is most certainly a murderer, and perhaps in cases of which the murder is predetermined, the death penalty is a possible conviction, while other situations would have to be more lenient.

The UK has no death penalty, and hasn't for years. I remember having to do an essay  on capital punishmet in English three years ago, and the whole class was entirely split on the views. A keen argument that relates greatly to Death Note is that it can be used as a deterrant. It's ruling by fear, but it's effective, and doens't cause problems for those who are law-abiding, or just...not murderers.

One quick question, though. If you killed someone by running them over, is the death penalty a possible punishment? Not asking for opinions, more facts, but wouldn't mide hearing some views.

Firstly, I hafta give you an applaud merely for your name and dedication to hide <3

Secondly, you made some very interesting points!

i mean no matter who it is they deserve a 2nd chance or perhaps even a 3rd and a 4th etc. Its just not right. But heck its what the anime is about and i love it.

Speaking from experience, there is a point where, when given another chance, then another, and another, it becomes obvious that you're being taken for granted, and it's jsut foolish to give so many chances. The saying goes "fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me"

Some people you just cannot change, though i understand where you're coming from. I think it's best to say, rather than saying that you would give them another chance, the death penalty should be altogether removed, so payment for previous behaviour can be given, whereas,  with death upon conviction, it doesn't leave a chance for any being who has been placed with such a charge, to redeem himself, or to be found innocent, when he was proven guilty. It's an entirely split argument, that appears to have no right, nor wrong answer logically, seeing as we have ideas such as "treat others how you would like to be treated" and "an eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth", but morally, counterbalances, in our human nature, step in and explain that "if it was an eye for a eye, we'd all be blind" and such. (gosh, I'm waffling again...¬¬  think I'm actually going to have to write an essay for this at some point)

Besides. if shinigamis existed whos to know what else exists. Also this opens the possibility of "L" having supernaternal aid / abilities himself. The realm of DN is pretty similar to ours therefore its not normal for a detective to deduce a murderer of having supernatural abilities in which only a name and a face is needed to kill.

I think, when it all comes down to it, there is an ability to think outside of the realms of possibility that we know we are confined to, when there is no other possible explanation. There is no humaly possible way to kill as many people as Light does, overseas, at the same time as other, with a heart attack, something which, while not untriggerable, is hard to cause in perfectly healthy beings.

There has been some discussion of whether L has a mental disorder, specifically Asperger's syndrome, so it may be that that helps him to deduce the supernatural part of the killings.

And now, I'm going to go back to my coursework before I annoy people...

The movies are, in fact, entirely unreleated to the series, I would think, as the first movie has told a different story (though same general plot) to the anime.

Death note is based off a manga that's already been completed, and is sticking quite true to the manga, so far, so it won't be ongoing, and, as hostghost said, it's planned for 37 episodes. Manga-wise, they're up to about...volume 3 so far, with episode 10, and half way through the volume at that, so I'd say it's perhaps about 4 episodes per volume, give or take.

12 volumes, so that makes it 36 episodes. Basic maths, but it's a good estimate *oddly proud of self*

Suzaku, you get an applaud for that, I have to say.

Is there like, a definitive right answer you've chosen, or you just wanna see what we think?

This is something I'm gonna hafta think on. I'll reply with my answer later.
