This show is very scarey and should not be watched by anyone.  You have been warned.

Ep 1 wasn't that scary. Don't pay attention to sindo :)

Hey I speak from experience our local club showed this and of 8 guys in the audience one wet his pants, one of them started yelling for his mommy and one more started jabbering nonsense and had to be committed, checked into the mental health ward at a nearby hospital.  It wasn't pretty.  And this group is normally pretty stoic, they watched Grave of the Fireflies without so much as a single tear or whimper from anyone, yet something in this show had them quaking in their boots, scared them down to the very core.

So is the 'scariness' a good thing or bad? :3

In any case, totally awesome that you guys are doing this show, i think it really suits you somehow. Can't wait for more!

the show is awesome, and Chiko is cool
the translastion is good too ^^

can anybody tell me what does Aya Hirano say in the ending song "unnamed world"
the english sentences..
'cause I can't hear her well, or her english spelling is so complicated :D

Really cool show with Arsene Lupin inspiration (at least in the first episode).
Superb encode - best I've seen in a long time. Registered here just to thank you.

I'm glad you're enjoying it! I hope it's not too scary :)

I love the Lupin-ness of it. I hope they continue that with the music, car chases, and break-ins!

In regards to the engrish in the ED... No one can understand it. I'm not even sure it's all engrish (I think it might have some french in it, who knows!)

The official single comes out on the 23rd so we should have all the proper lyrics by episode 3. I am sure the Japanese parts are correct, though.

@ Tofu -  Yeah the Engrish in the ED song is pretty bad.  :-X  Even I couldn't get all of it after several listens.

Anyways, I thought the first ep was good.  I enjoyed the Lupin-esque stuff in it.  ;D Also, Chiko reminded me of Kirika from Noir, which is a good thing, IMHO.  I will definitely be watching more of this show.

Wow.

This series has left me pleasantly surprised. Both your description and the fact that it's done by BONES enticed me to try it out, and honestly, I didn't expect it to be this awesome. Best surprise of this season, guaranteed to be the dark horse of Spring 2008.

I was amazed with your encode. Your font and sync were spot on gorgeous. I commend your work. You guys are definitely the right people to do this.

Now if you could just release it on time! The demand is there. Just drop everything except Harlock, 'cause this is the series you want to focus your energy on. Why do I say this? Because you guys do great work, and it deserves to be seen on a weekly basis.  [:burtonsnowboard]

Thank you.

You're doing a pretty great job... I just wanted to request, though, that you add an alternate subtitle track in SRT format. I use a TV-Out and the font you use is really hard to read (Also, it sucks, not being able to change the subtitle size at will)

P.S. I'm talking about the MKV version, obviously.
Title: Re: The Daughter of Twenty Faces Discussion Thread
Post by: Teppei on April 24, 2008, 11:14:26 pm
The font seems pretty readable to me, even when I show on TV, but I suppose your mileage is varying.   You could always demux the sub track out, change the fonts to your content and mux it back in  ;D.

Yes, I could. But it's really awkward. And I'm pretty sure it poses little to no work for the group to include a second subtitle track for people who dislike styling.

Nice episode, and generally good translation work, although I noticed a small mistake in episode 2:
(I don't know if it should have spoiler tags, I could not find any way to add some, so I'll try to be as non spoiling as I can).

at 19:17, somebody says:
「いざとなったら、子どもをたてにしろ」
which got translated as
"Shield the girl when the time comes."
But from my understanding, that should be:
"If you need to, use the girl as a shield." (or something along the line).

KM

P.S: Thanks for subbing this show, great to see some old school mystery. :)

Guys, just so you know, we've been experiencing delays on this project in the quality check stage. Our current QC staff doesn't seem to be available on Sunday nights/Mondays to do the QC in a timely fashion so it's adding an extra 2 days delay to releases.

If anyone here would want to QC for us, please send me a pm. You must have impeccable English and an eye for detail, of course. Knowledge of Japanese is a plus but not a requirement. You also must be willing to use irc.

Thanks!

So, basically, if someone wanted to QC for this project, only this project, always on time; but not QC for anything else, it will be denied.

Well, I was going by "In addition, to become a QCer for Live-eviL, you must also: Be willing to QC any L-E show that needs it. (If you’re going to be picky about what shows you will QC, then L-E is not the place for you!);" from: http://www.live-evil.org/so-you-want-to-be-a-live-evil-qcer/

But yeah, I really don't like to pressure people to work faster/or do anything they don't want to do.  So, yeah, I see your point and retract that statement.

Hi - I just wanted to ask about the progress on this anime series (I quite like it, although I never watched the Lupin animes or similar things, and I also don't know the manga by Edogawa Ranpo). Your progress was actually really fast until two weeks ago, so a short reply like "the translator is busy with other things" or something like that would be great (in case there isn't such a note somewhere already).

Obsessively visiting this website every day hoping there's a new episode becomes a bad habit quickly^^.

That being said, thanks for your great work! I've finished Shion no Ou and am currently watching The Daughter of Twenty Faces and The Rose of Versailles - all very enjoyable series!

Twenty Faces is really a form of pan-dimensional alien proto-goo that copies other people's bodies, grows a cravat, and then disposes of the new body whenever convenient.

Post by: Sindobook on July 30, 2008, 12:12:13 am
[spoiler alert... you have been warned]

It's similar, at least in concept, to Shion.  Twenty faces wasn't ever looking for a lover, he was looking to groom a 'perfect' sucessor to carry on his legacy.  She wasn't perfect enough, she angers easily, has a short temper, and enjoys toying with or causing pain in others.  It's obvious why he left her, he is a careful man, and a perfectionist; he figured he would start all over with Chiko, who showed potential, and by getting her at a younger age, would have a better chance of being able to groom her into being a 'perfect' sucessor to carry on his legacy.

[end spoiler]
Title: Re: The Daughter of Twenty Faces Discussion Thread
Post by: eschiver on July 31, 2008, 05:30:34 am
waaaiiiit, he wasn't looking for a successor. The successor FOUND and chose him!  :p

So Twenty Faces was saying something about realizing the war is still on and so he abandons the thieves....

Now these parts are probably still yet to be revealed... but they do raise more questions.
Title: Re: The Daughter of Twenty Faces Discussion Thread
Post by: Sindobook on August 01, 2008, 02:31:47 am
Why do you say that?  In the beginning, he had infiltrated her life and made it possible for her to 'find' him.  Who is leading on who?  The truth of a character comes out in action, not words.

20 faces is an intelligent guy and has shown to be very capable when it comes to strategem, deception, and intrigue.  You can't take the things he says at face value.  In addition to his physical skills, he's also excellent at 'mind games' and being able to manipulate or control people, and at building underground support networks.

And 'the war' is clearly over, at least the type of war fought with classical weapons on the battlefield.  When he said 'the war', he was clearly refering to something else.
Title: Re: The Daughter of Twenty Faces Discussion Thread
Post by: eschiver on August 01, 2008, 03:46:07 pm
Chiko chose to come with him. After all, he was about to leave without her, so technically, even though Chiko doesn't do it right away, she eventually claims herself as his successor... but I don't argue the point that twenty face opened up a chance for her to do so.

I guess I shouldn't have said found hehe since I used the word to mean she found him on TV and newspapers. I just think its debatable whether twenty face actually planned for chiko to be the successor. Might had just been coincidence/plot device. That or there is some twist in it as well. Like he knew her and found out about her from somewhere. But currently, since it isn't explicitly stated or shown, this aspect is quite debatable on both sides. it is quite common for some people to just meet by chance and hit it off from there.

Now about the war. I got nothing on that. No clue what it is about. When he says the war wasn't over, there's something to it that will probably be revealed later. So no comment, just speculation.  :p

Well the revelation came after the incedent with Tigger and crew, which would've forced him to basically start over anyways.  His underground network had been infiltrated, and only 2 members of his core team survived.  Tigger probably wasn't acting on his own accord, I mean he was probably a mercenary or someone else put him to the task.  Twenty faces' support network seemed rather unrealiable or undependable anyways, as we saw in earlier episodes.  Maybe he just realised how lax he had become, that anyone who followed him put their own life at risk, and didn't want to involve anyone else in his own personal crusade or struggle.
Title: Re: The Daughter of Twenty Faces Discussion Thread
Post by: eschiver on August 02, 2008, 03:26:28 am
I'm just uncertain what the war is really about. What you said touches nothing on that, except the reason he abandoned the thieves; which is similar to my opinion except for the Tigger part.  ;D

Why argue about what's going on:  we'll find that out eventually.  I still have the impression he truly is her father but we probably wont know whether I am right until the last few episodes.  This series is fun though, I like it.  Thanks for the updates:  I want more already :P

Thanks for the latest episode! The series does seem unique in some aspects, and in any case is definitely worth watching. Though I'm worried that it (and Nabari no Ou, which I'm watching, too - perhaps partly because the protagonist is equally different from mainstream as Chiko...) do not have completed storylines because the mangas aren't finished yet? Both are scheduled for 22 episodes - what's going to happen after that if the manga still continues? A TV only ending like Claymore (hopefully not)?

Oh, and the project status for Twenty Faces hasn't been up to date for some time now - could somebody update that :)? It's really useful if it's somewhat up to date.

remember the iron man episode? I found a strong resemblance in this Bonnie and Clyde Scifi picture  http://adonihs.deviantart.com/art/Bonnie-And-Clyde-2666-94592686

O.O

So during ep 14, Tome-san realized she was poisoning Chiko right? And she was bluffing with the Aunt about her tea being poisoned and bluffing that Chiko is super good at detecting poison? Or was the detection part true? I don't remember.

I'm not sure whether I'm doing anything wrong, but I'm not permitted to view the picture (I get an error page stating I have no permission to view it) - do I simply need a deviantart account, or something more/else to view it?

I don't know whether Tome-san would know about Chiko's detection/tasting skills, but the anime shows this from the very first episode - quite memorable, for me at least, because Chiko's behaviour seemed very strange until it was explained as her not eating her aunt's poisoned food - which she noticed by tasting it.
Seeing how Tome-san was shown with a second glass with similar pills in her hands, she pretty much must have bluffed instead of really poisoning Chiko's aunt.

It seems I had some information confused - I looked on the wikipedia article for the series (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Daughter_of_Twenty_Faces (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Daughter_of_Twenty_Faces)) and it said the manga was completed, but that there's a sequel (called Nijū Mensō no Musume Utsushiyo no Yoru) which is still continuing. I guess I got confused with other manga series (like Trigun -> Trigun Maximum) which switched publishers/went on hiatus and came back with another title but with a continuing storyline.

oh snap a sequel, now I wish there were scanlators for this haha.... so the anime only covers the first 8 volumes of 20 faces but splits off at volume 4?

What I meant was Tome-san's cooking skills are greater than the Aunt's so I thought she may be able to slip the poisons into Chiko's food thinking it was good for her without her detection. But now that she realized it she was quite shocked. Correct me if I'm wrong.

*edit* Wow, the picture I linked to disappeared... I wonder why...

Yes, the project is still alive. Our translator, Tofusensei, has been very busy lately, hence the delay. We're crawling our way through, though. Episode 21 is at QC stage and we'll get out episode 22 as well.

WHAT?  You want the series to be dropped?  You crazy person.

It's neither dropped nor finished.  There are just a lot of the staff who let real life get in the way of their fansubbing.  ;D

Just a simple question. Will this work be finished? >:(

If a non-English sub is released for this series, I will get it even if I don't know what is going on!

I found an italian sub version somewhere... was tempted to download it and use babelfish to translate it as I watched, but nyeh. when the last two episodes come out, that will just mean I have an excuse to watch the whole series again.

A question completely unrelated to the episode subbing though, does anyone here know anything about the OST? It's a great soundtrack and I'd love to have it.
Thank you, and keep up the good work!

You can get the OP and ED Singles and the OST from the CD rip group; Nipponsei  . Look for " [Nipponsei] Nijuumensou no Musume " ( the series name in japanese ) on their tracker.

If you'd like to support the artists involved by purchasing the CD, I usually visit ImportCDs.com (http://www.importcds.com/Productdetails.aspx?pid=1547126&ptid=2).  At the moment the OST is currently out-of-stock, though.

We are sorrey to report but the other night we had our tofu working on it to finish it off and the guy sitting next to tofu reported smoke coming out of his head and popping noises.  By the time a staff member showed up he had stopped moving altogether.  The only staff member we have who has any familiarity with bots opened up his head and saw his brain was just a blackened mess.  It was totally fried.  So we need a new brain.  Fortunately the pig had the foresight to back up his brain before it smoked itself so it shouldn't be much of a problem once we get a new bot.  The pig has decided it is more economical to just replace the whole bot than to try to acquire a used brain on the secondhand market.

You can help!  Go here and order us a new bot.  When you get your bot, put it in a box and ship it to the pig.  Ask him on skype for the address to ship the bot to.

http://www.paranoia-live.net/forms/botrequest.htm

Then we can finally finish this series.  Thank you and have a nice day.

By any other measure, having done 21/22 things would be a reason for celebration.

Ie. in the gambling game of blackjack, 21 is the best hand you can have.  22 means you bust, you lose your money.  So 21 is preferable to 22.  We like to keep our money.

Also if you take the number 22 and you subtract one from the first digit, add one to the second digit, you get 13 which especially on a Friday, would be a very unlucky day.  So definately don't count on a Friday release for this one.  We don't want another disaster.

Since we've gotten so many requests, here's a brief status report.

To whoever sent us the iDog, very funny.  Honestly people we need a real bot, not some kind of robot pet.  Send us a real bot body (with an intact brain) and we'll finish this series.

The pig is listening to your suggestions.  Thank you poppy561, like you suggested we tried downloading his brain data into V-BotSim JAVA applet recently but this just ain't going to cut it.  It made a few posts to ASuki and then started browsing the web and this forum and it just wasn't doing anything useful.  We tried to convince it to translate 22 but it went onto amazon and was about to place an order for 20 pink furby plush dolls so we had to pull the plug.  We're not going to go near V-BotSim again until they fix the Personality Module support.  The old Tofu definately wouldn't have acted that way.

On to the topic of encouragement, this is just as much your project just as it is ours.  We can't do this without fan support.  Pestering the pig ain't going to make it show up any faster.  I don't mean emotional support or support in principle.

The sooner we get a reliable, working bot to download his brain back into the sooner we can finish this and everyone gets to go home happy.

I know he broke down at probably the worst time possible but that is just part of what goes on in fansubbing and you have to deal with it.  Other groups have had to deal with worse issues every day, we consider ourselves lucky.  I remember when EF's bot went frankenstein, commandeered their webpage, posted nasty stories about there members, and just generally ran around causing havoc.  When Tofu went, he just went.  It was like a 'pop' and he was gone.

There's fans out there, lots of fans for this show, you can do it, so c'mon.  Even if you can't order us up new bot, get a used one or something.  Send us one of your old ones you don't need.  There's groups out there with bots that are idling and even one of those older ones would probably suffice.  You won't know until you try.  Not only will this series finally be finished, but you'll also earn the eternal gratitude of the pig.  And that's far more valueable than anything else you'll receive in your life.

This may be against the forum rules, but if you're like me and have been sitting around waiting for months for the final episode, it's nice to see that it is subbed out there somewhere.

<edited> with the final episode subbed.  I don't know the quality of it at all, as I just found it earlier today and I've put off watching the last few episodes until I had it all done (and that's good too, would suck to have watched the finale after a 3+ month break from the anime).

Just for those people who wish to move on from the pestering  :P

Hey, I was pestering because that's what it said on the Project Status...

Eaglestrike, I appreciate the link!  With that I can at least finish the series, and then go back to quietly waiting for the last episode from Live-eviL to match all the other episodes I have :(

Edit: I watched that and the quality is QUITE low, but I guess it got me what I wanted. Though it was riddled with bad grammar among other things.

Still going to wait patiently for the live-evil release.

I wouldn't call it crap, since banter like that seems to be an integral part of the Live-eviL culture.

On the other hand, it does make it look like they are stalling the release just for the fun of it. I don't think that our L-E friends would actually do that, but what they do and what they seem to do isn't necessarily the same thing.

With that said: If posts in this forum does get through to Tofusensei, I hope that he considers this post as more pestering for the final episode...

Damn, the secret's out.

Yes, every meeting we all gather around the big long table, traditionally Tofu would take his place at the very end of the table, and over milk and cookies, we come up with new evil schemes to drive the fans into the depths of utter despair and unbridled angst.  Sometimes the neighbors complain of noise from the bouts of hysterical laughter that come from the room, but lately we've bribed them with cookies to keep them quiet.

'Evil' is part of the name, it's who we are.  Live with it, accept it, and move on.

There are two basic types of people in the world.  Or more, two basic ways to respond to a problem thrust upon oneself.  One type, when faced with a problem, will simply sit bewildered or go running to someone else in a haphazard fashion and ask that they solve the problem.  The other type, when faced with a problem, will take ownership of that problem, understand it, and first attempt to fix it on their own accord.  They may eventually have to rely on another or enlist the help of another, but they do so only after reasoning a proper solution.  There is also an abberant type that will behave in a way that is counterproductive to solving problems, not necessarily with intent.  It is left to the reader to know which type is most sucessful in life and in general.

We see this in Chiko's behavior, she is not only extremely perceptive, but she typically attempts to deal with many of her problems on her own accord.  While she does not necessarily hesitate to enlist the aid of others, these are reasoned decisions that she first makes in her own mind.  Can you imagine a show that was any different?  If Chiko was the helpless type who simply went running to someone else in a haphazard fashion when faced with a serious problem?

My point here is that the effectiveness of Chiko's actions comes from the fact they are well-reasoned and that when she does go to others, she chooses those who are not only willing to help but capable of getting of the job done.  Chiko does not pester people, nor is she foolish enough to believe that pestering someone else is actually a solution for a problem.

So take this as a warning, before being the next person to pester, bug, beg, etc. him, think it through.  Look at all those, many who have come before you, and observe the result.  Is there any credible to reason to believe the results of your communication will be any different?  Is he, or anyone here, even the right person to go to and solve this problem?  Are you requesting assistance in solving the problem or simply begging him to solve it for you?  What does this say about you?  About him?  Are you taking an effective action to bring about resolution or just venting frustration with no purpose?

In the year 2129 they found a time capule with assorted items from the previous century. Among the items were a petrified pig brain and several antique dvd disks burned by antiquated comuter equipment. Analysis found they contained an old entertainment medium refered to as Anime. It was refered to as the Daughter of 20 Faces and was complete except for the last episode which was in an old dialect of Russian...

Hi,   [:hello]

Another person who joined the forum just so I could post here.   ;D

I want to thank all of the people who make up the anime subbing group Live-Evil for their hard work and time.  You produced a great sub for all of us and we appreciate it.  I will say you had me worried.  I was really starting to despair that the last episode would ever be released.  I am glad that it finally was.  [:jar jar]

I am sure that many people watching were curious about the young boy, Yoshio, that is looking for his parents.  When he gets in the car and drives away he is telling his mom he wants to be a detective and join Akechi-san when they get back to Tokyo.  The bag on the seat has his name Kobayashi written on it.  Well folks that is all you need to know to determine exactly why he was put in the last episode.  For those who don't already know "Fiend with Twenty Faces" is a villain from a famous series of Japanese detective novels about detective Kogoro Akechi.  The series was written by Edogawa Rampo in the 1920's and 30's.  Yoshio Kobayashi is Akechi's adopted son, and leader of the Boy Detective Club.  Akechi is married to a woman called Fumio.  To find out more go here:

Thanks Live-Evil!  I await your next sub!  Maybe you could finish Ashita no Nadja (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=520) since nobody else seems to want to.  Rather surprising when you realize that Rosemary Applefield and Nadja Applefield were the first and second place winners of the 2004 Anime Saimoe Tournament (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anime_Saimoe_Tournament)  I never have figured out why no fansub group finished this series.  I would think that a show that received first and second place as the most Moe Anime Girl in a series, would have subbers flocking to finish it.   :o   [:love]

Thanks for clearing that up, it was so long since I watched the rest of the series that I couldn't remember where I'd heard the name Kobayashi..

And thanks for the last episode!
