Title: The Trapp Family Story (World Masterpiece Theatre)
Post by: gumbaloom on May 22, 2006, 11:55:02 am
Hi folks,

Just so you know.

I am in the process of "persuading" Live-eviL to pick up The Trapp Family Story. A series from Nippon Animation in 1991.

For the uninitiated it's based on the same story that the Sound Of Music was based on and so you'll be able to experience the joy and laughter of seeing Maria and Vonn Trapp children all over again.

Of course Maria sings in this version too so expect lot's of nice songs :D:D:D:D

So far I have the first DVD(the official Bandai Visual ones not the bootlegs >_>)

This will be the first series that I'll be attempting translation on. The Japanese have full Japanese subtitles so it makes it easier for me as my listening skills are still not all that great.

Episode 1 is already translated by yours truly and waiting timing/editing/tl check. The OP/ED are well in to typesetting.

As I'm writing this I'm about 10 minutes in to translating Episode 2.

It's just a bit slow gowing transcribing the subs off the DVD so I can look up words in JWCPE but I'm getting there.

Well look forward to it =D

-gumbaloom

PS
I can assure you that this series will not suffer the same fate as 3,000 Leagues as I own the DVD's and I'm doing primary translation =D (big hint to a certain someone to get their ass in gear)

Hey, Gum, I was wondering, once an anime is licensed....can u get the DVDs and fansub from them?  I mean once u own the DVDs, u can use them for fansubbing....at least thats what u seem to be doing with this new series u have picked up.  Then even with Tsubasa, once it gets licensed, can't u just get the DVDs from Japan, and DVD rip and sub them and post them like that?  I mean it's ur DVD, u can do whatever u want with them...or is that some kind of piracy? Personally I don't understand why these ppl dub them....it's a business most of us don't care about...I mean most of us dislike dubbings...dubs just suck.  Changed dialogues, music, names, censoring...it practically changes the story!  And the horrible western dubbing cast...well I don't blame them....western and Japanese voices and way of speaking is a lot different.  And dubbers seem to always 'Americanize' (I created this word I guess) the series...lolz

And I watched this series (The Trapp Familt Story) many times a long time ago, it's nothing special but it's nice and I am sure kids would like it...I mean many of us like classics.  But u seem to be already lagging behind with ur other projects, why bother about picking up a new show just now?

Didn't you read my other post? -.-

Funimation has cleaned up their act in recent times. Yeah they might dub it BUT THERE WILL BE A LEGITIMATE NON HACKED UP SUBTITLED VERSION when they release the DVD's.

I know this myself. I thought they were going to hack Galaxy Railways to pieces but they didn't. So don't go flying accusations at Funimation till you have actually bought/watched some of their Region 1 Discs.

And to answer your question, just because you own a DVD doesnt give you the right to fansub from it. Fansubbing from a Region 2 DVD would just be as bad as ripping a region 1 dvd.

And to answer your other point - the projects that lag are the ones where Tofu plays a major role in it eg translates/encodes it.  ;D ;D ;D

Any project that *I* play a leading role in does not :P

Okay so Trapp Family never got licensed?  I thought these World Masterpiece theatre stuff get lots of attention...hmmm.  But I suppose u get the right to sub because it's not licensed, right?  Anyway, I just wanted to say, I can't purchase DVDs because I can't afford them from the low income country I live in so I can only manage to watch the dubs on TV (by the way, Tsubasa Season 1 dub is being showed on Animax Asia now)...and thats what I am frustrated about because although I myself got to watch the original thing....I don't want the others here who will be watching it on Animax to watch some stupid dub with unmatched voices.  And personally I don't get why Animax always cuts out the opening and ending theme song parts...they're very important in an anime.

Actually dubs are only good for detective series...because the series are normally famous for the story and the dialogues, which is normally unchanged with detective stories.  So the only dubbed anime I could say I enjoyed was Detective Academy Q.  Midori no Hibi was also good...and I wish they left the kuns, chans, and sans there...which they never do...and get me confused.

Anyway, good luck with Trapp Family.  Can u tell me why every single project Tofusensei is working on seems to be lagging behind?  Currently, is he doing Tsu 29 and 30 or focusing on the other series that are lagging behind even more?

World Masterpiece Theatre got plenty of attention in the Middle East / Asian Countries but it never made it to US/UK shores.

To the best of my knowledge there has never been a legitimate license for World Masterpiece Theatre series in the UK / US (I'm not talking about bootleg VCD's here) unless you have information to the contrary?

-gumbaloom
PS www.yesasia.com does the Tsubasa DVD's for $54 a pop and they do free shipping to a lot of the Asian countries or very very low cost.

Okay, so these low cost DVDs...they have the original Japanese language and music like u mentioned before, right? ...along with the English dubbing?  In that case, thanx...I'll see what I can do.  Or if I come to the US as planned next year, it would be a different matter...but thats if I get a scholarship and study for higher education.

And about the Tofusensei thing?  Any info available....?  Well, he is online but he doesn't really seem to bother about writing in posts.  I just hope things are all right with him.

Link to the 1st Volume

The original Japanese DVD. Unsubbed yada yada

I dunno how much it would cost for you to buy from them cos I don't know which Asian country you're from.

If you do manage to come to America. *When* Funimation releases the Region 1's they will be uncut, original music, original voice actors and english subtitles. you should be able to pick Funi's region 1's up for less than $20 a time depending on where you shop. Yes there WILL be a dub track on the DVD's but you just need to make sure you pick the right audio track on your DVD player. Japanese not English =D.

thanx..how do u manage to get the time to reply to so many posts...lolz
And I calculated from their website....a single DVD would cost me 1/6th of my monthly salary (when I get the job that is)..which is quite a lot.  So the problem still remains.....(THATS WHY I WANNA GET OUTA HERE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, NO ANIME, NO LIFE!!!! :'(}

" torappu ikka monogatari" was aired at least in Italy, Austria, Germany, France (massive censored) and AFAIK in Belgium, too.
Some details are available here: http://users.animanga.com/meisaku/91_pres_E.htm

What?  :o Why did they have to censor it?  ??? I mean...there was hardly any explicit content.  I have watched all the episodes...didn't find anything worth 'censoring' .  Has censoring become a habit for dubbers? Lolz.... ::)

The French removed most contend concerning Nazis. Unfortunately, the last episodes take place in 1938, so the didnt only remove all swastikas, they also canceled some complete episodes.
Seems like an attempt to re-write history ...  ::)

Some people just don't wanna face the truth, the western hemisphere is always trying to rewrite history...or avoid any attempts to allow people to recall it...the Nazis happened, it's history, whats the big deal now?!  I just hate these stuff....like the PokeMon incident.

Long story made short: Club Dorothée/AB Video.

AB Video has been known to be the french version of Harmony Gold, so, that pretty much explains everything.

Yeah, b/c Asian countries have never been known to do things like historical revisionism...  ::)

Oddly enough, this week is the 40th anniversary of the Cultural Revolution in China and you /still/ can't openly discuss it in China.

Yeah, but I'm talking about the US dubs here, how they censor stuff that reminds them anything about a hideous historical event...like the 9/11 attack, Katrina, Nazis, etc.....us anime watchers have the right to watch the complete uncensored thing---no matter what it may contain.  If a viewer has a problem, he/she can just stop watching it.  Well, when they do censor things like hentai/ecchi scenes, thats acceptable but all these historical issues!

Also, I live in a Asian country as well and all my country seems to be good at is reviving historical events in our minds ;)...whether it's one of those blood shedding ones like wars or if it's some event which brought prosperity to the humankind.  I mean here, people ruin their past and hence the future through all the stupid mistakes they make  >:((without thinking beforehand and worship and deify the history as if they will hang you if you cannot say what happened on so so day of so so year.  ::) And what they don't understand is we need to focus on the present and see what can be done to improve conditions and ensure a better future for the people.

History and histroy...the no. 1 in the list of priorities.  This is all they care about.  At least if they learned from the mistakes made in the past, I would have said this too much history thing did do good but since I haven't seen anything of that sort.... >:(

For example, the street I live in used to be called 'New Circular Road'.  A week back they changed it to 'Shahid Selina Parveen Road' ???...and this Late Selina Parveen was some kind of a war heroine I think...act of worship.  ::) Now did they need to do that? ::)
She didn't even work or live here!

So referring to this as a habit of 'Asian countries' would be a bit generalising, don't you think?  And also the word 'never'.... ;D

I cite:

OUT: Trapp Family Story - Ep 1 (NEW SHOW)
June 30th, 2006
Are you ready for a treat? You know you are. And we’ve got it for you right here at Live-evil!

We bring to you a classic World Masterpiece Theatre anime: The Trapp Family Story. This charming story stars Maria Kutschera, better known as Maria vonTrapp. That’s right, this is based on the novel that everybody’s favorite movie “The Sound of Music” is also based on. So, if you’re looking for a classic with romance, action, and of course some great songs, check out The Trapp Family Story now!

Unlike some of our other shows of late, our Trapp project is well-staffed and in no danger of lagging. So enjoy the show and look forward to more eps to come!

I'd like to add to the announcement, that the story isn't just based on a novel, but on reality. The Trapp Family existed (I even believe some grandsons and granddaughters of Maria von Trapp are alive in the USA still).
The following biografical data may be a spoiler to the plot - so please stop reading here, if you don't want to spoil the anime ...

*  *  *  *  *  * S  P  O  I  L  E  R     W  A  R  N  I  N  G  *  *  *  *  *  *

Maria Augusta Kutschera was born on January 26th 1905 in Vienna. Her mother died a few days after her birth, she also lost her father three years later. Afterwards she grew up at her grandmothers and a warden.
She was trained to become a teacher and entered the roman-catholic Neulandbewegung after an experience of faith. She worked as governess at the school of the Nonnberg Abbey in Salzburg and wanted to enter the order later on.
The abbess sent her to become the tutor of the reconvalescent Maria, daughter of the famous Austrian Captain, Baron Georg Ludwig von Trapp.  On November 26th, 1927, she became the second wife of the widower Trapp. She gave birth to his daughters Rosemarie (1929) and Eleonore (1931).
Since the family lost its complete capital in 1935, she founded a family chorus with her husband's children (five daughters, two sons). Franz Wasner, the music enthusiastic house chaplain of the family, took over the musical lead. Already in 1937 the chorus won the first prize of the folk singer competition in the Salzburger Festspiele.
As officer loyal to the emperor Trapp wasn't acceptable anymore after the annection of Austria to the Third Reich in 1938. In the same year the family emigrated to the USA. (Here the anime ends).

In the USA the son Johannes was born in 1939. They settled in Stowe, Vermont, and built a house called "Cor Unum".  The family went on concert tours in the USA under the name of "Trapp Family singers". They organized an aid action "Trapp Family Austrian Relief Inc." after WW II, and collected clothing and food for Austria. After the death of Baron von Trapp in 1947 daughter Johanna left the chorus, son Werner did so later on.
The chorus went on several tournees, e.g. through South America and Australia. 1950 Maria Augusta von Trapp performed with her chorus at the Salzburg Festspiele. 1956 the chorus, which had performed about 2000 concerts all over the world, was disbanded.  The surviving "children" live in the USA on their Ranch.
In the age of 82, Baronesse Maria Augusta von Trapp died on March 28th, 1987 in Morrisville.
(source: wikipedia.de; translation is all mine)

If anyone is interested, I could give you some information about the historical background of Austria at the time of the Trapp Family.

The blame for the neglect of 3000 leagues lies squarely at the feet of Tofu. If he can't handle subbing Nana / Tsubasa the chances of him handling 3000 leages is next to nothing :-/

Once cash flor allows I'm gonna comandeer 3000 leagues if Tofu doesnt stop failing it on that project.

World Masterpiece Theatre was largely overlooked by the english speaking world despite large parts of continental Europe showing it.

I know it's daft, the English speaking world ignoring books written by some of America's and Europes literary greats :o

Actually, there a number of WMT series that were released in the United States. Not full series, but a few episodes here and there on VHS. The ones I know of currently that have english episodes released are.  "Little Women", "Tom Sawyer", "Rocky Chuck the Mountain Rat", and "Peter Pan", also "Bush Baby" in Canada and a rumored english dub out there of "Swiss Family Robinson."

There are tons more literary anime out there. (Les Miserables, Anne Frank, Christopher Columbus, Pinnochio, Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics, Little Prince, etc etc.)

Calling all anime fans!!!!

Live-eviL currently has a major shortage of dedicated QCers. :'(
This does not bode well for quick and efficient releases of YOUR FAVORITE ONGOING L-E SERIES!!! :o
Yes, you heard me right! If you would like to help speed the fansubbing process along for your favorite ongoing LE series, or in some cases simply get it moving through QC again, please check out the "Come QC for Live-Evil" thread in the "Live-eviL Recruitment Center" Forum. Read what various staff members have to say about the job, and if you think you might be able to help out send me a PM ASAP! Thank you in advance to those who are willing to give it a try!

So far I have the first DVD(the official Bandai Visual ones not the bootlegs >_>)

except the Japanese there is also the Taiwanese release by Pimgroup.   It is not a bootleg (CSS protection and region locked) and has also Chinese/Japanese audio and Chinese/English subs, though the English subs are of low quality. But they're much cheaper than the Japanese version

for a list of the series released visit this link

well if you cant wait you can order it cheaply here with English subs (no bootleg btw). The last 4 episodes are perhaps   of the most intense I've seen. So if Live-Evil reach those episodes I'd suggest releasing them together.

Now if only someone could sub the series "Kojika Monogatari" I'd be gratefull

For anyone knowing German, all the episodes are on Youtube (except 5 and 33). Watching it in the supposed original language is much better as with most of the WMT dubs.

This anime was created in Japan and so Japanese is the original language. Also for information the Japanese don't use the absolutely authentic original german versions they get rewritten so it does make for a lot of fun when trying to find German versions of lyrics of songs to compare :/

I think Suz has been adding the contents of her kitty litter tray to my pipe. I'm smoking baby.

Trapp 20 is translated. That means I'm 6 eps ahead of the game.

Trapp 15 to 18 at editing with Miss Tlynnec
Trapp 19 to 20 at TLC with tenken

Rough schedule is I'm gonna have 3 weeks off from translating now and start up again mid November. The aim is to release 23 to 25 at Christmas as they're Christmas/Snow themed episodes so Eps 21 and 22 will be translated sometime in November and the Christmas ones once November kicks in :)

We're well on schedule folks ^^. (Well I am :P )

Update - Trapp 18 is now at edit. There is a high likelihood of you getting a uuber huge release of Trapp now...4 eps possibly more in one chewy Mamo-sized morsel.

*noses* myuu? not to be a pain in the butt, however; any word yet? I hope this one doesn't get dropped :<

My Japanese is a little rusty after taking a year off but I took class for about 2 years of it, does LiveEvil need some help with this one to help nudge its speed along?

lol read back up the thread.

21 and 22 are still at editing.

Cos I'm busy with school and they're not out yet I've just not got round to doing more translations yet. Once those are out then I'll get back in the translating groove which should coincide with my school crap being taken care of...

I hate to ask this, but is there any reason why editing takes so long? I've become addicted to the series so the wait is almost unbearable. Please forgive my impatience.

And thank you for all the hard work guys, it's much appreciated.

I will say that things might be moving again soon, but we can't really give ETAs at this point.

A little question about the last seconds of episode no 40, the very last of this series: three characters are seen on the bottom right corner. I took a snapshot :

I have done all I can with Trapp for over 400+ days waiting patiently yet un-able to move, I will not point fingers, I will not name names. The responsible person and/or persons who have been delaying Trapp ( one of my favorite projects) for so long know who they are. I have also informed the prev mentioned some time ago now, that I have set a deadline date of 1/1/11 before I take what ever corrective measures needed to get this project moving again, for at that date, it will be 1 year, 3 months, 27 days since any activity.  :-\ :'(

I do not really want or wish to do this, but on the other hand I want to get this project moving again, so at that date I will do what many others have been suggesting to me to do.

Suz, I take it you need translation? Im not sure of what help I can be there sadly as I know my Japanese isnt up to a translating par (not taking class in 2 years dont help either @_@) Im not sure what I would be able to offer in hopes of moving this along as well. This is one of my fav series as well, and would love to see it to its end

Well, if the inevitable happens and you can't find a replacement translator for this, I just might be willing to swoop in and save the day/series.  ;) We'll just have to wait for another few days and see what transpires and etc. Then, we can go from there.

The project hasn't been dropped. Suzaku got in touch with the translator, gumbaloom, and he said he still wants to work on it and is working on the latest episode(25, I think). We just don't know when the next episode's script is going to be turned in yet.

Er...I don't know how well that would turn out, since I don't know your knowledge level of Japanese. However, it could potentially turn out to be quite humorous.

Anyway, whatever did happen to Gumb? Did he totally go MIA on his beloved project?
