In the UK, gun crimes are almost unknown. Over this summer, a police officer was shot when pursuing some criminals, and it made the front page, as it was such an infrequent event. I don't know about murder rates here, but I know that guns aren't what cause murders that do happen here.

However, we also don't have the death penalty. Maybe, in countries where it applies, the severity of punishment is proportional to the access to the ability to murder? If that makes sense?

It makes a lot of sense.

I see that keepergirl and I come from completely diffrent places here, when you list reasons for the death penalty I only see reasons why not to have it. And the last point is quite intresting, all though completely nonsense. The main point after catching criminals is to get them back into civilization. If you look at murdercases, how many murderes actually commit another one? A tiny persentage, and they are mostly part of organized crime. Which i said earlier is something to strike hard down on.

Anyway, I think most of your points are based on ignorance, no matter how much facts you cough up. I don't think I will ever understand the death penalty, even if someone would rape my girlfriend I would not want to see them dead. Better with a lifetime of regret than a few years of martyrdom.

This has gotten quite off topic so I will let this be for now. We could talk more on IRC if you want  ;)

People who get convicted on a first-degree murder charge are usually cold, hard, uncaring,  psychopathic and very intelligent people.  The type of people who would look their mother in the eye as they stabbed her repeatedly.

This is just funny..... not.

You are good with facts etc. And prove valid points but I can't see how death penalty helps recurring crimes. To get the death penalty you would have had to do something so severe that if one would not have death penalty you would be in jail probably for all your life or until you are old. So Death penalty really don't do anything about recurring of crime, since the recurring criminals don't commit that severe crimes.
And overpopulation is a problem yes, we have it here too, the cops keep arresting drug addicts and filling the prisons up... Like they do over there as well. Also when the government can spend millions of dollars keeping a top security prison for only a few selected prisoners in Guantanamo they should be able to build more prisons.

About the split second thing, It's the decision of pulling the trigger that takes a second and not buying the gun! And you read that gun laws here are more liberal, no they are not. You actually have to have a hunters license to carry a rifle, and the fact that 95% of all guns are for hunting makes a lot of diffrence.

I have said this before...

I would have to ways to react if I had a death note and I was aware of what it is capable of. Most likely I would just hide it, keep it to myself perhaps in a bank with a note explaining what it is and that no one should ever use at and it should remain a secret forever. Could be like a family eirloom  ;)
The other posibility is that I use it to become a hitman, a hitman that can't be found. I said earlier that I do not think killing is justified, so I do not think I would come to this. But perhaps if I felt that I had no other option I would use it.
Like in a kill or be killed situation...
But I guess I would feel totally miserable, and would have a hard time deciding whether to do it or not.

I can't wait to see some of Light's reactions to killing, until now he is just a cold killer, but there must be some reactions in him as to his feelings towards life.

I agree with xjapan, killing is never justified and I voted accordingly in the poll.

Here in Norway we have a maximum sentence for 21 years, this works quite allright for now. Since we don't have serial killers or mass rapists etc. The crime repetition rate for murderers here are almost 0. One of the biggest problems here are the organized crime and I know we might need to change our legal system to be able to get rid of this problem, they are still able to participate in planning and ordering of legal activities when they are in jail.

I know that crime is diffrent around the world, and when you actually have repetative criminals there is no problem to lock them up for good. I can't see why you would have to kill them. How many innocent people do you think the american legal system  have murdered?
It is so tragic when you read that they find evidence that contradicts a verdict and the person was killed just a few days ago....

Death penalty is contradicting the human rights, and when you take the boy away from he's mother and kills him. Becouse he pulled a trigger? Should one really be able to ruin ones life with such a small decission. Guns are widely available in the US and danger lurks almost every corner, atleast for the less fortunate ones. Should we condemn them for infinity for just a fraction of a second decission?

I say no, and you should too, or I'll come and kill you  :P

There has been some discussion of whether L has a mental disorder, specifically Asperger's syndrome, so it may be that that helps him to deduce the supernatural part of the killings.

Which points to yet another strange fact. That Light infact is the one with most human traits. One could ask the same question to many legal institutions, maybe it really is necessary for a judging instance to be un-human to perform its tasks.

Ok, I'm back again.
I've been on a bit of a Kitano rush these past weeks, well not really. But I have seen some of his films.
The one I wanted to mention today was one that I receive in the mail just a few days ago. "Hana-bi"

The story is that of a cop (Kitano) and his terminal sick wife. In frustration over many things, many that perhaps never is explained in the film, Kitano turns cold and overly brutal at his job. And after the shooting and paralyzation of his friend and partner he decides to make the best of the time he and his wife has left. In his own way he decides to rob a bank to take his wife on a trip around Japan, and we experience a man who acts instead of talks.
If I where to characterize this film one thing comes to mind. And that is the fact that all the characters in this movie are learning, they are all chanced and it is portrayed so naturally. So human.

The story might seem a bit cliché when you hear about it, but it differs from this totally and proves a special piece that truly affected me.
Now I am deeply in love. And this movie, hana-bi wich means fireworks, opened my mind to some of the feelings that makes up the whole experience of being in love. It is a true drama, actually a spectacular drama, of victory and defeat, of friendship and hate, of love and broken hearts. It has perhaps the most humor out of all the Takeshi Kitano movies I've seen, but you have to be able to see some tragical comedy. I never laughed, I don't laugh easily, but smiled a lot. And Takeshi once again makes me dig far into my perception of the human being. Watching this film is like having that true meaningfull conversation that we long for. That one conversation that support you, yet carry you forward at the same time. A conversation with a kind and wise man...

I hope some of you will watch and enjoy it.

PS: Here I add the imdb link to both "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence" as I talked about earlier and "Hana-bi

As I suspected at once this thread was opened I was going to be the first to use it  :P

Bastard-sama the grim, banned me again. This time for the following line:

Quote
(05:43:06) (hostghost) Special is the word

I was refering to him. And all though this may be concidered a spiteful remark I hardly think it's enough to ban.
Also it was a reply to the following line:

Quote
(05:42:44) (@bobby6|LLE|away) bastard-sama should feel really special, we had to make a whole new thread just because of him lol ;)

So it was a part of an ongoing conversation, and bastard-sama was not apart of that conversation.

Even though an OP is allmighty and his ban should be respected, I feel that it was absolutely unnecesary, if he was uncomfertable with the remark. Simply saying so in either PM or with a kick would prevent any such action to happen again. But when OPs have so diffrent ways of practising the rules it really is kinda hard to keep a friendly and open tone in the channel.

I guess I could have solved this issue by simply talking to one of the ops directly, but wanted to put this thread to good use and went the issue.

Many great films have been mentioned here, like Audition.

But one that I haven't seen mentioned here is Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence.
Allthough it is a international production, this is the movie where Takeshi Kitano makes his break into serious film (he is originally a comedian). It is directed by award winning Nagisa Oshima. Also starring Ryuichi Sakamoto, who does an amazingly presentation of a second world war officer, compulsive perfectionist and filled with japanese pride. He has also composed the beautiful soundtrack that plays emotional harmonies truly beyond what you normaly see in POW movies. As Sakamoto himself says, this music is mysterious to both japanese and westerners.
David Bowie plays as well, a genuine portrait he performs. And his whole character contrasts the very existence that the rest of the people in the film are experiencing. Tom Conti, and actor I haven't seen much of also avoids the cliché's that british soldier roles often fall into.

Overall this film is amazing, it has a pace and a narrative that differs from any other film, but not in a why that alienates it. Rather contrary, after watching I wanted to become a part of the situation and understand even more. There are far too many aspects that come through in this film to even start to explain them here, you should all just watch it. And take your time, leave the popcorn in the kitchen, because you don't want to miss any of the tention or the drama.

ehem... ::)

Don't reveal trade secrets  :o

Realy she is actually more of a ps3 fan than me, but she wants a Wii too. But when I have the cash, I chose the game  ;)

If would get one it would be PS3, like the blue-ray drive. Like Gran Turismo.
But i don't think I'll have the money, but in 6-8months perhaps. Then the prices have dropped quite a bit. So maybe I'll buy one for my girlfriends birthday.
