Title: Yawara, yet again \o/
Post by: Tubi on September 03, 2004, 03:46:01 am
Hi there,

Since i saw that the last Yawara thread was kinda left behind, i hope it's not to nagging to ask about this:

Will there be, is there, or maybe has been, advances in the Yawara translations? I noticed it has not been dropped, so i was wandering if i should expect episodes 21+, or even expect soon ^^;

Thanks again for the hard work,
Tubi

You know, I was thinking...are there any definite plans on the after-series Yawara! TV specials (and whatever other episodes there might be)? I recently stumbled across some videos, but the quality of 'em weren't that great.

Yay! More Yawara!

I can't explain why I like this series... perhaps because it's so very different from the typical rising athelete series *cough* Naruto *cough* Ranma *cough*, in that Yawara is not completely infatuated with being awesome. She just is. She works hard at Judo because it's part of who she is, not to show anyone up or prove anything.

Anyway, it's good to see more episodes. I can't believe it keeps going for over a hundred more... not that I expect it all to get translated, but keep up the good work!

Thanks Live-eviL!! I've had the Neko subs (1-32) on VHS for ages, but some are beginning to deteriorate, very nice to have these in digital format.

Best of luck on this project, much appreciated!

That's the way a real 'martial artist' is (Zen 'without ego').  If you're really the best, you don't have to, or even want to go out of your way to show everyone.  Naruto and Ranma and those other stereotypical comic-book characters are so insecure and needy that they are constantly trying to prove to the rest-of-world that they are better than anyone else.  Yawara is also at least partly based on reality / realism or presenting a semi-real view of a martial art while ranma and naruto are an obvious fantasy.

in defense of naruto (and i honestly can't believe i'm doing this but here goes) he didn't have any support from anyone for the majority of his life. he was rejected and shunned just because he had the nine tail fox sealed in him.  i find this to be a very real situation for a person to feel/want/need acceptance from their peers and the search to be loved for who they are.  and as the story progresses it seems that naruto is slowly realises that acceptance needs to come from himself first despite what others may think, he is who is he is and works hard to prove this to himself and to others i dont necessarily see it as trying to prove he is better just that he is equal.    yawara on the other hand seems well loved by everyone, has a loving, albeit crazy/eccentric, grandfather and is good at what she does (truly she has a gift) but takes it for granted.  eventhough she has now set a goal for herself, she really isnt working all that hard to achieve it. instead of practicing hard for her events  (which is supposed to be her passion..frankly i've seen doorknobs exhibit more excitement about being turned than she has about judo) she is spending the majority of her time, losing precious hours of sleep to study for an exam so she can to major in..homemaking? wtf is THAT about?  she isn't the best at what she does.  she is a big fish in a small pond and soon she will be a small fish in the ocean once she trys to compete at a world level and not concentrate fully on judo and give it her all.  this is accurate of people in real life as well.  heck, i did it in highschool with my studies and went on auto pilot and did not make an effort to learn more, do better.  i still graduated with honors but i realise now that that can't happen all the time.  i'm just waiting to see if yawara will find that out.

Yawara is supposed to be a typical girl (in japan) like the 'girl next door' character type.  Other than the she is very skilled in Judo. Her dream is not to compete or to be a world-class champion, that is the dream that others (ie. grandfather) force on her.  She is only doing it as a way to get closer to that guy, not to mention her father.

Scripts != raws :P

We have access to raws all the way up to the end of the series. What I was referring to was timed and translated scripts.  Our request to track down Neko Creations scripts was successful and we're very grateful to those people who helped us out.

So we won't need to translate episodes from scratch for a little while yet ^_^;.

*Ack* Lazy.  Well, as long as they are accurate in their translation, all's good.  Are they accurate?
Title: Re: Yawara, yet again \o/
Post by: gumbaloom on May 18, 2005, 03:15:43 pm
If you look at the staff credits in the opening titles of Yawara you will see that our fansubs are based off the original Neko Creations scripts.

For those who dont know Neko Creations were the original Yawara fansubbing group. They were a VHS based fansubbing group and distributed their fansubs via traditional VHS distribution channels before the advent of digital based fansubs. Neko Creations subtitled episodes 1 - 45 before they stopped fansubbing. The scripts for episodes 1 - 28 were placed in to the public domain and after a public appeal the scripts for 29 - 41 were very kindly donated to us by people connected to Neko Creations. As for the accuracy of the translations, yes they are accurate.

Once we get to episode 42 we will be needing a translator to translate episodes from scratch so if anyone is reading this post and would like to help in translating episodes of Yawara 42 and upwards please introduce yourself to us on IRC or send an emai to tofusensei@live-evil.org

As for raws as I said in my previous post we access to raws all the way to episode 124 although if I can find a cheap copy I want to try and get the Yawara Perfect Collection but at 110,000 yen its a little difficult when I also take account of customs charges. I've been trying to sell on mint conditions of Transformers Masterforce and Victory Boxes 1 and 2 to finance this but this has been as of yet to no avail.

However for the time being look forward to 29 - 41 being turned out in a reasnoable time frame :)

Regards

Weeee do we like Kuni-kun or what. I had to have my puke bag handy when I typeset this episode. She is SOOOOO obnoxious in this episode. I hope she gets whats coming to her at some point as she's asking for some comical mishap to befall her and she is SOOOOOOO evil making Matsuda fawn over by turning the waterworks on.

Next ep looks like its gonna be a Matsuda/Yawara ep YAY!!!!! \o/. I can feel the romantic tension now. *hits up Mamo-chan for next script XD;;;;;* work FASTER!!!!!.

It is indeed a pleasure to typeset these on a Saturday morning :D.

Oh and on the R2 issue. I think my best bet is gonna be when i go to Japan in December. I can go to one of the discount anime stores in Tokyo. Better start saving the $$$$.

I was watching the last couple of episodes, and something struck me... that very special sake that Inokuma-sensei drinks, the jigokuruma one - which you very aptly translate as "Hell on Wheels Sake" - is that a real sake brand? Or is it a parody of a known brand?

I ask because, though I do speak Japanese and enjoy sake, I am fairly ignorant of the finer details of brands, etc.

Well Yawara 41 is out folks, hope you have enjoyed the recent spate of fast releases.

Yawara is now a joint project with Froth-Bite and I'm pleased to say that Yawara 42 is edited and will be typeset soon and work is already far advanced on the 2nd OP and ED which we will need from Ep 46 onwards.

For those who need catch up I put up batch torrents today of 21 - 25, 26 - 30 and 31 - 35. I'll prolly do a 36 - 41 batch torrent once Ep 46 is released.

Just an interesting statistic for you, with Ep 41 and those 3 batch torrents I went through circa 30GB of torrent bandwidth on my new server today  :o . Its a good job I like Yawara isnt it ? XD . But please do try and help your fellow leecher out if you can by seeding those batch torrents as I can't keep my box on there all the time I dont have an unlimited supply of bandwidth to consume  ;) .

The torrent file for the Yawara batch ep21-25 doesn't seem to be working for me.  I get an error msg.  I use Azureus.  Is the torrent file ok?
Title: Re: Yawara, yet again \o/
Post by: Anax on August 13, 2005, 06:15:33 am
I've figured out what the problem is--this particular file was created with Azureus, and it looks like Azureus did something weird in that one specific instance.  The "dht_backup_enable" item in the "azureus_properties" part of the torrent should be an integer, but is instead a string (containing the value "1").

A *second* problem is that Azureus reads the file enough to cache its own internal copy of the .torrent file, which will keep the error coming back, even if you fix the file.

Look in your Azureus cache (...wherever Azureus keeps stuff on your system.../active/) for a file called 3938659FE003D69303ADFCB4E7774BB9A5193B0F.dat (and possibly that same name .dat.bak)  You'll need to delete this file before continuing.  You should probably shut down Azureus, then delete this file, then start back up again.

Once you've done that, you can load a repaired .torrent file into Azureus (my version is attached here as .torrent.txt, to get past the attachment filters--sorry), and all should be well.  Because the change is outside of the info section of the .torrent, it doesn't change the tracker signature, and all continues to work as expected.  I might ask that someone from L-E upload my repaired version (or repair the file themselves) to .torrent sources (I got mine from scarywater), since this problem is going to hit any user of a recent Azureus version--and the workaround (as you see above) isn't trivial.

Thanks.

(Edit: Oh, and I found the torrent going with 11 peers and no seeds--everbody was almost almost almost done, too.  Happily seeding away, now.)
Title: Re: Yawara, yet again \o/
Post by: gumbaloom on August 13, 2005, 10:30:35 am
Urr how quickly did you jump on this torrent might I ask when I first put it up ?

There was a bit of a screw up when I first made the torrent and I removed it from scarywater and readded it. If you got it in the first 10 - 15 minutes of the torrent going on the web you probably got the messed up version but after that everything should be working quite happily ^^. (Well the number of complete downloads should indicate that). I know after remaking the torrent I uploaded best part of 30GB to get the torrent going on my server.

Title: Re: Yawara, yet again \o/
Post by: Anax on August 14, 2005, 07:45:48 am
Well, I may have initially grabbed it pretty early--but I can safely say (since I just downloaded it again to check) that the copy on scarywater is definitely still broken.  It will work just fine--for anybody who *isn't* using Azureus 2.3.0.4.  Azureus 2.3.0.4 will choke on it every time.  (Note, though, that if Azureus has a *working* copy in its cache, it will ignore the bogus one, just like Azureus will ignore the working one if it has a bogus copy in its cache.)
Title: Re: Yawara, yet again \o/
Post by: gumbaloom on August 14, 2005, 08:17:56 am
WEIRD...well I KNOW I remade it and my torrent logs speak for themselves. Must just be one one of life's little weirdnesses. Its just so darned weird that the other 2 batch torrents arent having any reported issues. Well the torrent is working apart from this little weirdness ^_^;;;

Great episode and great subbing.  Thanks a bundle!

I just want to point out (in fact, if you look at my reg date, I registered specifically to point this out) that there's one mistake in the preview for the next episode.  The Korean dish that Jigoro's talking about is Bibimbap, or as the Japanese say, "Bibinba."  If you haven't tried it, I highly recommend you do.  Especially in a stone bowl.  It's good eatin'.

Otherwise, keep up the good work!  You guys seem to be roughly following a weekly release schedule, which keeps me very happy.  I hope you can keep it up now that you're in uncharted territory!  If not, I understand (though I still cry).

hello, can someone help a little by seeding the 01-04 and 09-12 pack. We are stuck for some time now at 94% and 62% and i must admit that  it is a little frustrating ;D .

Anyway thanx for doing this series, i hope you gonna keep it up to the end and i wish you good luck for the remaining episodes.

Great work, L-E, I really enjoy watching it! I'm slowly catching up with the releases, just watched ep 40. And there is one thing really wrong in the subs: Fujiko say she learned to dance at the "Bolle Chez" troupe.
In fact it's a very famous russian school (even I know it ;)) and its called Bolshoi, named after the theatre in Moscow.

Yo.  I just finished watching eps 1-49 in two days, and well, I guess that shows my opinion on the series.  ;D

Here's to the hope of seeing an LE and FB presentation of episode 124 some day.

Cheers!

Yes, I registered just so I could commend Live-Evil on the job you're doing in fansubbing Yawara.  Thank you so much for picking this up and subbing what should be called a classic of the seinen sports genre.

Incidentally, does anyone get the feeling that Ginban Kaleidoscope was written as a response to Yawara?  Tazusa is aggressive, cocky, and usually angry, has no doubts about wanting to win a gold medal in figure skating, and doesn't strive at all to find a man and be a "normal" Japanese woman (Pete finds her, after all).  Plus Tazusa's rival, while beautiful, is very yassashi and not at all boastful as Sayaka is on her humblest of days.  Though I sing Yawara's praises, you have to admit that the show is a bit, err, dated as far as gender expectations go.  It's likely that Ginban Kaleidoscope was written by women who felt a need to strike back at Yawara's 1980s sensibilities.  That is, a female Olympic-level athlete can be Yawara's personality opposite and still gain a following, as well as a man.  Err, sort of (watch the series to see what I mean).

I'd imagine that NANA and Tsubasa (both good shows) are taking up a lot of L-E's time, but I for one would really like to see the next episode of Yawara out, even if it is a recap episode.   ;)

nana and tsubasa are done by mostly tofu none of the other staff is affected by it.. what took long was trying to match the flashbacks with what was said in the previous episodes which took awhile

Can anyone tell me how many members are fansubbing for live Evil, whats their names?  Add exactly what positions they hold?  I mean most of u guys seems to be strongly affected by Tofusensei prioritizing Tsubasa and NANA so I was asking.  By the way, if someone wants to translate for u...does he/she have to watch the raw frist, then write the dialogues down and then translate and send the text files to u guys?  And whats typesetting?

The problem is that Tofu is the lynch pin in a lot of projects. He decided to pick up translating stuff and then he dropped the ball and lost interest / couldn't be bothered to work on it.

That's left us with lots of half done projects that can't progress untill Tofu does some work be it TL checking or full ep translating.

Luckily Yawara doesn't require Tofu's intervention as that has another translator...

But...
Ask Dr. Rin
3000 Leages In Search of Mother
Magical Angel Creamy Mami (less than 10 eps off being finished -.-;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;)
Galaxy Express 999

All of those require Tofu's intervention before they can progress in some way or another and all of them have had very slow release rates. Yeah I can accept 1 or 2 eps every couple of months but I will NOT accept projects being left for a YEAR without being worked on. That's unfair to the fans of that show.

And to answer your other question
Translator watches raw, writes down dialogue in to .txt file and sends
Timer takes .txt file and times it to the audio and creates a proper timed script
Editor edit's the script for grammar / puncuation and makes it sound better
Typesetter makes it look pretty and apply's all the different fonts and stuff you see.
Encoder applies the subs to the raw video and produces the final vid that the leechers download.
